Street Fighter Retrospective - Part 4: Real Disaster on Film

I was going down the list of animated street fighter media and watching them. Once i realized there was zero fighting in return to Fujiwara capitol, I was equal parts annoyed and amused. Why did they make that haha??

Can we all acknowledge the fact that Chun-Li in the 2009 LA movie isn’t portrayed by an Asian actress, even tho the character has historically been of f**king Chinese origin?

Man I remember seeing the street fighter movie in theaters and loving it I was barely a teenager but still loved seeing all these characters on the big screen (same with the MK movie) but now I see that a tighter more coherent movie with main focus on the fire fighters and less thrown in characters could of led to sequels where they better introduced new characters and hero’s fighting beside guile and ryu eventually facing up against akuma with a 3rd movie maybe even having evil ryu as the ultimate villain . Hindsight easily shows that They wasted way too many characters in this film as simple cameos or fodder. This could have been a successful trilogy that would have easily by now had remakes or a reimagining with updated effects etc etc. what could have been

My younger brother and I also had All the street fighter GI joes between us when they came out , they were actually the last action figures I collected and got for a Christmas present as a kid as I grew out of them not long after and barely played with them in the first place (i was 13 when I got them so I was stuck between wanting to continue my child hood and the forces of nature that led me to being way more into various video games especially those more mature or teen oriented themes and material including mortal kombat and the various SF 2 games, playing organized sports mainly baseball and basketball and of course starting the lifelong journey of knowledge that will still hopefully lead to one day fully understanding the opposite sex lol )

but I loved and displayed those SF gi joes for years and years, they were awesome and I eventually bought them rest for myself that year so I could have them all on display in my child hood bedroom but now I wish I had kept them sealed instead of opening and displaying them like I did back then

Say what you will about Street Fighter: The Movie, but one thing it is not is boring

Say what you will about the movie but
A) it’s cheesy but incredible and has so many great moments
B) Raul Julia is incredible and every scene he is in shows how great of an actor/man he was

you said they made a good Street Fighter movie on their second attempt, but really Street Fighter 2 The animated movie was released before the live action one

Wouldn't it have made more sense for Miguel Nunez to play Balrog instead of Dee Jay? He basically has Balrog's personality in the movie anyway.

but if the have a black man in the villain side who was suposed to be good, and another black guy in the hero side who was suposed to be bad
why dont change treir roles and make dee jay the camera man and balrog working for bison?

That was a sucky part of the history to get through. But you made it enjoyable and nostalgic. I would guess that we were around the same age. This game seemed to hit me with the same beat on my birthdays as you.

😂 I had the street fighter movie game on Saturn as a kid and I remember looking at Sawada and thinking he was a lame fill in because I didn't know he was from the movie or even famous 😂

For 30 years I thought it was Hollywoods fault that the movie was so bad! But it was all capcom suits!! 😤

happy 30th anniversary street fighter 2:the animated movie & live action street fighter!!! (love ming as chun-li that i wish we saw her meet mulan in wreck it ralph 2/raul julia really being alongside the animated movie & 2v the best version of m. bison that the games should be more like.:3)

as not a good street fighter film(especially to assassins fist/the animated movie definitely.) the 90's one was i love it as a fun solid 90's with genuinely enjoyable funny moments(zangief as a whole,dee jay being what game balrog should've been and raul julia having a heartfelt awesome reason for giving his all succeeding/love the ending music.) and while way worse(not as bad as mortal kombat but definitely the worst of the capcom cartoons.)do like the cartoon being a sequel to the live action film.

akuma being implied to be ryu's dad was in the alpha generations movie not the alpha ova(the most that happens there is akuma basically telling ryu he's not shun's father/shun just being a kid that heard of ryu and wanted to be like him to move up in the world after his mom passed which tbh till the end the film doesn't explain well that i wish it was about sakura training with ryu instead/akuma going after her power instead with how generic sadler is and mary sue cyborg just there to show ryu's power.)though it's definitely the best version of akuma being alongside sakura the best thing of it for as much as it's alpha in name only(that i wish it had been a 3rd strike anime instead.).

gen isn't evil he's just an assassin though that's kinda a weird note compared to the other stuff in legend of chun li like c. viper technically being in it(using her actual name maya.)/bison looking more like a live action geese howard that feels more closure than the king of fighters movie.

also kinda stretching with the star wars comparison as sakura isn't a overblown prodigy like rey,a hadoken's definitely visible/imo more potentially dangerous compared to the force,chun li isn't ryu's sister,compared to palpatine being the literal definition of an asspull(alongside just showing star wars needs to just end/stick with visions.) m. bison has an explanation for returning(for as pointless as it was in 6 ruining charlie's sacrifice wasting a slot to shilling 2/better die again permanently.),ken isn't as hard headed as han and would say blanka is more like chewie in alpha 3/dan was the one who knew him not ryu outside likely fighting him in 2.

though to go back to the alpha ova did really love birdie in it as i like how much he went out of his way to try to protect ken/chun li from the cyborg that i legit felt bad for him when he gets pummeled hard apparently dying when the base blows up.(that actually was a big part of making me happy to see him in 5 despite letting himself go to rufus levels.:3)

I remember Raul Julia very well from the movie, which I watched so many times I knew all the lines at one point. I didn't know he was fighting cancer. I remember Bison as the most true-to-the-original character in the movie. Maybe Vega too. GG, Mr. Julia. Well played.
The "change the channel" line also stayed with me for the rest of my life. God the late 80s and early 90s gave us such precious gems of bad action movies... I'm glad I got to be there and witness all the Van Dammes and Lundgrens and Schwarzeneggers and etcetecera doing their magic.

Dude be like, “As everyone knows, the ONLY seven characters in the movie ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’… were the dwarves.” 😅

To be fair, Kylie Minogue was a pretty perfect casting choice for Cammy at that time. As a kid, when I heard she was going to be Cammy, I immediately thought it was a great choice.

Well, you gotta remember one of the reasons why Brian Cranston is the voice of Falo is he got into voice acting because he worked on the original season of Power Rangers. He was the voice of Saba for the white Ranger and some of the other bad guys monsters. I think one of them was named Snihur or something like that.

I think the most heartwarming part of the story that was the shit show production of SF the Movie, was that Raul Julia ended his career with a role that was basically a gift to his children. And he made such a meal of the role. Other actors could only hope to be half as dedicated as him

Before I watch, I just wanna say that I love the Street Fighter movie. It's super fucking cheesy, but that's exactly what I love about it. I will take a bad movie that's fun to watch over a technically good movie that's super boring any day of the week

remake sf the movie the game with all the mechanics and better time and planning.. after hearing about the mechanics i need it made better

They don't actually mispronounce 'shadowloo' in the 'legend of chun li' film, as 'shadowloo' to begin with was a mistranslation for the english version that just stuck. It was supposed to be 'shadowlaw', and even is written that way in the original 1994 animated film and spoken as such in the japanese audio tracks.

You are 100% correct. Raul Julia is the fricking man. He wasn’t in this movie for the money or fame, he was in this movie to make his children smile. I don’t know what his kids think of the movie, but I would like to think they were proud of their father doing this for them and giving us one of the best and most cheesy M. Bison’s ever

i think an easy solution to getting fei long into the movie, make sawada fei long. it probably wouldn't have solved any cast or script issues but it would've been practical.

I love to see a three letter anime, that's based off of, Street fighter three or modern-day Street fighter.

When it came to the Street fighter game that's based off the movie, I never knew that it existed, until the arcade one was Neely forgotten all about. As for all the street fighter cartoons, I seen almost all of them, except for the educated one.
