I have heard so many knitters say that sweaters made with machine washable wool yarn will stretch out. Have you knit with any and what do you think of it?

It seems a bit difficult to find a sport weight wool yarn or any other yarn.

I like the idea of a 'rounded v' for the neck of that top, as your sketch shows. You can make it a little lower and not have to worry about the "flop factor" that a round neck might pose. And you rock a 'v.'

Thank you so much. This was so helpful and interesting! I’m learning so much about why some of the tops I knitted didn’t come out right. I didn’t know that substituting yarn in patterns with a similar yarn was so important. Now I will be paying attention to this when selecting a less expensive yarn to make something.
I love the new top you are making. The color is beautiful. Just gorgeous. I envy how you can create your own designs.
Thank you for the video and showing how you designed your WIP top. 🧶

I'm pretty sure you've already considered this but just in case...Knit yourself a lightweight linen tank top. The knitting might be boring but should go fast & you'll probably get a lot of use out of it. I knit one for my daughter a long time ago it had, what I believe is called a "racer back". She wore it to oblivion.

Thanks Roxanne! I always learn interesting things from you and it is really appreciated. I love your linen WIP. Love the colour and can’t wait to see the finished top. I found it funny that I had never heard of chainette linen until your last video, then the very next day I got an email from one of the yarn stores I shop at, advertising a chainette linen yarn that it seemed like they had just started carrying…lol. 😂 🥰❤️👍🏻

Wow, what a beautiful top being such a pretty colour. We are just heading into Winter and your top made me feel really cold.
It is lovely to see you looking so well and hopefully feeling much better.
This weekend in New Zealand is Kings Birthday weekend, so we are having a long weekend and I am knitting a little Sweater for my Great Nephew.
I decided that now that I have knit an adult version, perhaps a smaller version might be a good way to practice. I need to keep my hands busy, I don't know why but I enjoy knitting alot. Anyhow, I will leave you to your weekend. Please take care of yourself and stay well.
Looking forward to seeing you next time.

Roxanne do you have a video or recommendation for steeking stranded colourwork knit with superwash wool? I know superwash is not usually intended for steeking because it isn't sticky, but I have a million ball ends from sock knitting and a limited budget for buying new yarn. I'd rather not work flat unless that's the only viable option.

So interesting to learn about yarn behaviour and chainette in particular. Also I have never blocked prior to finishing a project as I thought it would ‘set’ the material and make it difficult to rip out or make it uneven. Thank you once again.

That was really interesting and useful what you said about chained yarns. I knitted and child's cabled jacket with a plied chunky yarn as I couldn't get hold of the chained chunky suggested in the pattern. First of all I came down a whole needle size as it was looking enormous and then I had to buy more yarn than suggested as I was using it up very quickly. Jacket looked great but I'm wondering if the weight of it will eventually distort it. Doesn't matter really...being a child's jacket it might well grow with her😁

This episode is a great example of why I tune into casual Friday’s…I never know when a fantastic lesson about garment and yarn construction will happen! So interesting, informative and perfectly timed for the top I’m about to start, thank you! I crochet much more than I knit and have found blocking-as-I-go to be invaluable, especially with bamboo yarns or blends that can really relax from having a bath.

Thank you for answering the questions about linen! I was wondering about linen growing, so it was informative to hear that giving the garment structure in other ways can help counter that.

I have a question about something you mentioned very tangentially, if that’s okay! For garments that are intended to be worn off the shoulder (not just a wide boat neck, but a neckline that sits entirely somewhere between the clavicle and the underarm), are short rows still necessary to provide a good fit? I imagine the answer will be that it depends on the wearer’s individual anatomy, but I’m wondering if you’ve seen any standard or best practices for this.

Lots to think about when swapping yarns. It's a lot like sewing actually. You can swap material, but the results can be very different depending on what you swap fabrics with. Fibers rarely behave the same. The top is really cute. Look forward to seeing it complete!

Is there a way to reduce the space between stiches when you transition from a knit stitch to a purl stitch? I always seem to have excess space there, no matter how tight i make the stitches. It does not happen when i change from a purl to a knit. Any advice? Thanks.

When you spin linen commercially you often add oil. This needs to be removed. A weaver’s trick is to put linen fabric into cold water for 24-48 hours. Then dry it. This goes for already finished bought linen garments as well. I am, at presemt, not a knitter (just lurking to learn 😂) so I do not know whether it is a good idea to “wet out” linen yarn before knitting with it?

Hi Roxanne, a very interesting video (I wouldn’t expect anything less!) and lots of things to ponder on. I had to laugh when you were explaining the tendencies of various yarns because, back in the 80s, I bought a cotton jumper which started out at just below the crotch. After years of wear and washing it was just above my knees!! I don’t have a dryer, so it always air dried on a line or rack, nice to know how it managed to grow over 8”.

Thank you, Roxanne, for this educational and (for me) timely video. I am trying to decide on a yarn for my next sweater, and the Dandoh linen sounds like it would be perfect with its lighter chainette construction, yet still in DK weight. I just subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to seeing your completed linen top. Thanks again.
