JoJo's beetle adventure? Beetaro's bizzare... Wait a minute, these beetles are NOT Jotaro or DIO and not exist in Japan!
Adams' horned june beetle(temporary name, Dicronocephalus adamsi) is a kind of horned cetoniid beetle distributed in Korea and China. This species occurs in may to june and can be found in oak forest. The Korean name 'saseumpungdengi' means 'stag chafer' because male has two horns(are made of extened clypeus) like a stag. Like rhinoceros beetles or other horned scarab beetles(goliath beetles, dung beetles, etc), female doesn't have horns. Only males use horns to fight other males. They also use their long front legs and sharp claws like whips.
Sexual dimorphism in Adams' horned june beetle is very clear. Male has horns and white body, but female doesn't have horns and red brown body. In the early summer, the Adans' horned june beelte starts their active life. In my opinion, Adams' horned june beetle must be considered as one of the 'symbol' insect of Korea. (most of Korean insect manias think that Callipogon relictus and Papillio xuthus are symbol insect of Korea. C. relictus is a symbol of the Korean journal of entomology and P. xuthus is a familiar butterfly in Korean culture like songs, folks and traditional arts.)
