The European Basketball Championship, also known for short as the EuroBasket, is FIBA Europe's flagship men's basketball tournament that is contested quadrennially - it was initially held every two years until 2017, when continental championships start to take place every four years with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The EuroBasket is first held in 1935, just three years after the establishment of FIBA at Geneva, Switzerland, and Geneva was, in fact, a fitting place to stage the inaugural edition of this basketball pinnacle in Europe, and at first, 10 national teams were invited to participate. With a complicated formula, the final game would see Latvia be crowned as the inaugural EuroBasket champions; according to the rule at the time, the winner had to hold the following games. Throughout the tournament's decades-long history, it was the former Soviet Union that has held the most championships, with a total of 14.
For the 2007 edition, the EuroBasket comes back to Spain for the third time in its history. Played between 3 and 16 September 2007 across four Spanish cities, 16 teams entered the tournament as it serves itself as the continent's qualifier for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, in which berths would be given to the winning and runner-up teams (and eventually the third-placer). Spain, then the reigning titleholders of the FIBA World Championship a year prior, did barge their way through to the final match held at Madrid, but blazing shots from Andrei Kirilenko have driven Russia to a shock win over a heavily-favored Spanish side, triumphing against the hosts by only a point - 60-59 - to claim their first EuroBasket title.
