I've what is considered mild autism. I've lived most my life being completely fine. But lately I've been collapsing, having meltdowns, not being able to vocalize etcr.
So I've been looking at what can cause it. Turns out practices like this played a huge roll in it.
They learned to ignore it when I'm uncomfortable. They teached me to just accept things and move on. They learned me to mask, to stop the behaviours that were supposed to help me with the world.
So please don't do this. Although it might seem helpful, aba can cause things like trauma, burnout amd makes things way worse in the long run.

I dont think its necessarily a maladaptive behavior to not want to play pretend, for example with baby dolls or such. But i do think it CAN stunt ones growth if they dont pretend play since it is a sign that they arent attempting to even mimic human behavior which is one of the main learning techniques children utilize. So id love to hear an explanation as to why we would teach kids how to pretend play even though they dont find any joy in doing so, theyre not interested in it. Since they arent interested in it, it would not help them mimic in generak and wont help them grow.

I did this for years as an SEN teacher . it didn't work - it only worked at snack time they would learn to give us the picture to get what they wanted - like a robot. it was never generalised! that's the whole No wonder its not recognised in the UK. its actually cruel to make a kid pass you a picture to get a sweet. what's the point ? it never transferred to other areas. I was all on board after the training they realised tis a fad.

So essentially they are treating autistic kids like dogs. Give them treats, and they'll learn like positive reinforcement. Got it. 😒

Studies find that nearly half of the people who went through ABA therapy met the requirements for PTSD diagnosis. ABA conditions children into masking their autistic traits, and teaches them how to please others and not focus on their own needs. ABA sometimes used (and in some cases, still uses) electric shocks as punishments. ABA still thinks that there is something inherently "wrong" with us and our autisticness. They still think we need cured.
ABA therapy is ABUSE.

I have a child that is not diagnosed but he is showing signs of autism and I was thinking about getting him aba therapy but now that I see this, and the comments from autistic adults expressing their experiences I think I am going to put a halt on putting him in aba. I don't think it is right to bribe a person with a bag of treats, just so they can do what you want them to do. My kid loves gummies and I know that if I show a bag of gummies and request him to fit a shape in a puzzle board he would scramble to do it in order to get that fruit gummy snack.. That way of training is just wrong to me. My baby is not a puppy. I am getting my child OT and speech therapy though.

The arguments I have heard for the negative people. Is they have no idea what they are talking about don’t have children who are autistic or live with autism 24/7. Their opinion is that of an ignorant sociopath who thinks they are showing how virtuous they are parroting things that mean nothing but sound good. These are the same people who move out of state and move to a state and ruin it by voting the say way that made them move in the first place.

My experience after attending these "social skills" groups:
-During high school, I was able to blend in enough to make "friends," but none of those friends stuck around.
- It made me overly concerned with others' opinions and being agreeable, to the point of becoming a doormat. A few people even commented on it.
-It didn't do much for me in the long term, and now, as an adult, I'm essentially back at square one, with zero social life and nothing to show for it.

ABA therapy has come a long way. yes it’s controversial but it’s still important to helping people, especially those with low functioning autism. i understand ppl saying stims and lack of eye contact are not harmful, and i agree. but what about those who don’t communicate? if we use positive reinforcement to help people with low functioning autism learn that communication is beneficial, we can set them up for a better future.

I don’t think that you can be a little autistic, you either have it or you don’t.

ABA therapy sounds kind of barbaric; if someone is uncomfortable with my kid spinning I think they should go to therapy not my kid.

So my son will NEVER go to ABA.

The basic “evidence” they have quoted has been debunked and yet they continue to use it as it helps justify their abuse.
They talk about a daily battle! Do you want someone who thinks they are fighting your child looking after them?
If your child came home and said that when they failed the maths test they were punished would you be happy?!

I couldn't figure out why my child wasnt improving when he was involved in his "treatment" and now Im starting to think that the people working with him are enabling his behavior rather than working to improve it. ABA is something Im going to be looking into ASAP. He is 3 and I want him in a treatment plan that actually works. I know he has the ability to improve, I just didn't understand how to do it so I am so thankful I stumbled upon ABA therapy. Just to have hope of improvement is a Godsend.

Ableism is the A word that behaviourists like this don’t want to hear. Call it out. Being an ABA with all of the knowledge from people with lived experience and all of the research we have on ABA’s harms is completely unjustifiably ignorant and unethical.

We are in a process of receiving a formal diagnosis; but I know my side of my family is neurodiverse 😊. Coming from a safety person who worked in food manufacturing, please please don’t get upset /discourage or fall into the “oh, it’s your kid… or It’s the condition that makes them sensitive to foods”. These chemicals/preservatives /additives/ etc all affect the brain or gut! If the research tells us neurodiverse kids are wired or experience more neurologically, when why wouldn’t these chemicals affect them differently? Do your own research, but look at the SDS of most additives/flavors or looking into how food is processed and much it’s coated in sugar! Eg. Food is cooked/pastures for food safety, but the sugars in the food come out during this process and then more sugar is added for taste.

Forcing compliance through coercion like ABA does is probably the cause of the alarmingly high suicide rate in OTHERWISE HEALTHY autistic people.

Every kid wants to live a peaceful and productive life with loved ones, every kid will be more than happy to discover better coping mechanisms, just give yours acceptance and support to discover how.

I’m a psychotherapist and a medical doctor. After seeing how ABA works, I understand very well why there are so many autistic people against it. I found it especially painful to see how children are drilled to react sometimes against their own nature. This creates an alienation from who they really are. And this will be mostly create problems later. It’s so important that autistic people learn to stop masking, while ABAlearns the children to mask.

How does ABA therapy work?
By masking autism via coercive behavioural conditioning & replacing it with PTSD.
That sounds horrifying.
It is.
Was ABA designed by the same person behind "conversion therapy"?
Yes.
And people exploiting these children are rewarded financially?
Yes.
Isn't that behaviour more problematic than autistic behaviour?
Yes, it is. These people are monsters.
Is there any treatments available to cure ABA practitioners?
Yes, unfortunately escaping ABA requires empathy, compassion, humanity & integrity, values antithetical to the practice of ABA.
Why are ABA practitioners like this?
Money, apathy, ignorance, internalised ableism, sadism etc.

So basically you guys are forcing kids into masking. The guy who created this was literally spanking and electrocuting kids.

There's nothing wrong with autistic and ADHD people. There's a problem with the rest of society treating us as if we're a problem.

My childhood I was taught I was a problem and beaten into submission. Then I became a huge people pleaser for most of my life having breakdowns and flippin the f*** out.

Everyone's solution was to call me crazy and stick me in a mental ward. This doesn't help people like me. This makes us easy targets for narcissism and gaslighting and manipulation.

I seriously hope the autistic community stands up and fights back. They're suppressing us when there's nothing wrong with us. I seriously think the rest of the population is in denial.

Almost every autistic person I've ever met is extremely creative and empathetic and very intelligent.

What we call honesty you guys call black and white thinking.

What we call being deceptive you guys call social norms.
