A good idea is to have an offline backup too. Tape is great for that. Great video.

your tutorials are so helpful! So much easier and clearer than going through all the synology documentation.

Thanks for the video! It would be helpful to also hear how to do this process remotely the first time, even if that's not the optimal way of doing things

.....you mentioned this might take hours or days & local backups.....during this time, is there a computer (laptop) that needs to be running in order to maintain this process.....or can the two NAS devices sort this out on there own (if connected to the same router)?

Question: Does this only work on port 6281? I have 2 older Synologys (a 2 bay and a 4 bay) I want to put offsite in the same location, but from the looks of it the offsite backup wants to use 6281, otherwise it fails to connect. The issue will be when I set up port forwarding from the router as it can't send packets to 2 different internal IPs. One thing I noticed is that with DSM 7 you MUST SAVE THE CERTIFICATE KEY wen you are prompted to do so. Keep it somewhere safe along with yur password or your data will be irretrievable. I suggest doing a mini backup to test that you can access the data before committing for the long haul.

Hello SpaceRex, is this still the best way to secure offsite NAS in 2023 please?

I love your tutorials and they have been extremally helpful over the years. Recently upgraded my NAS and of course plan to use the old one for an offsite backup. My question is whether Synology's quickconect & DDNS safeguards/protections are sufficient or should I use a better router like Tplink's Omada router to provide another layer of protection or even a VPN. The off site location only has a crapy ISP router with next to no firewall services. I have watched your synology security video's as well.

Can this be done if the onsite drive to be backed up isnt a NAS but rather just a local drive on my desktop?

I have the two NAS devices on the same network, but from the main NAS when I click on the "Server name or IP address:" dropdown in Hyper Backup, it just does not find anything. On the target NAS I have Hyper Backup Vault installed and running. When I manually type the server name or IP address of the target NAS, it does not work either. How do I solve this?

guy, why would I be backing up to a nas server on the same network? That is not even a common use-case, we need to backup to an offsite synology that is connected to thier connect cloud.

"Synology makes this incredibly easy?" Same local domain but consistently getting "incorrect password" errors. Even though I can log in directly without fail. DM923+ to DM215J both 7.1.1-42962 Update 6 for 923+ and update 5 for 215j. My intent was to deploy the older unit offsite but this seems not worth the aggravation.

Thanks a lot for all your tutorials on Synology NAS systems. I have a question if I may, my NAS is 10 years old, it's a DS213+ two-bay. The operating system is DSM 6.2.4.
I would like to get a newer one with more storage capacity and use the old one for offsite backup. Question is, is it possible to do this? The new NAS uses DSM 7 and btrfs file system the old one uses ext4 system and DSM 6.2. So, can I use the old NAS as backup target? I hope you can help me out here. Thanks in advance! Wim

Your video only describes backup and mentions nothing about restore. I think this is a massive oversight that makes the video pretty much worthless.

Love your stuff but this was not your best video. You didn’t say where to get the port that was going to be forwarded, I slowed it down and watch it several times. It is located in hyperbackup on the original NAS under Tasks<Target. Also you don’t explain how to port forward or how to set up the DDNS (there is no link in the description to the video you said you did. Thanks for your work, just wanted to give some feedback on this one since I;m going to have to find the info on someone else channel and I figured you would want to know… Cheers.

If I use my old NAS as target to back up, I get "version incompatibility problem" message. My target NAS is a DS213 so it has an old DSM (6.2.4)and my origin NAS is a DS220+ (DSM 7.2.1). How is het possible to back up to an old NAS if they have different DSM?

I want to have my Photos on the NAS with the SSD(2TB)(running photo backup from all the phones in the family) and to back it up on my other NAS that is full of HDD(12TB in hybrid RAID... so about 8,5)... is the vault the best or only option?
I don't care about multiple copies of the data... the 2 of them would be enough.
what would be the best option?
BTW, your videos are about the only option for Synology stuff, so thanks

Hi @spaceRex I've just done this in place of another tutorial which advised to use tailscale (That didn't connect despite setting the task to overcome DSM7 limitations). However if i try to set up a new backup task and link into my created DDNS it doesn't allow me to enter the NAS username and password and says it can't connect. However editing pre created tasks (all created when the 2 NAS were on the same network) seems to work. Any advice?

Hey can you explain what access rights someone offsite could have by poking around the remote NAS?

1.) Can someone just pull out the remote/offsite NAS drives and hook up to another computer -- is data at risk?
2.) What about if someone just connected to the local network of the remote/offsite NAS? Or even directly to the NAS?
3.) Did you have this set up on the same Synology account?

Thanks Rex, just getting into this and really enjoying your videos.

Will, I would assume "offsite backup" means I am backing up to a NAS that is NOT on the same LAN as the NAS I am backing up from. Since the NAS I am backing up to, is in another state, that means I can't go to a dropdown menu and find "server name or IP address". The dropdown menu would work (populate with an IP address), only if you were on the SAME local network connection. What's the workaround for an actual REMOTE NAS? How do I find out the server name or IP address of the REMOTE NAS I want to back up to?
