For those of you that do not have a Ham Radio License, ARRL web site provides information to get you started
https://www.arrl.org/getting-licensed
1. Get your DMR ID by registering with RadioID.net
https://radioid.net/account/register
(DMR ID is needed to register with Brandmeister)
2. Register with Brandmeister
https://brandmeister.network/
After registration, Login - click on hamburger menu (top left) or your profile icon with your callsign - select ‘SelfCare’- create password in the Hotspot Security field (this password is needed for the Pi-Star set up)
3. Format SD Card
Formatting prepares the SD card by deleting all of the data and files on the card. This is recommended when SD card is new or has become corrupted and is no longer able to be read by the device (Formatting is available in Disc Utility on MacBook)
4. Download Pi-Star Image
http://www.pistar.uk/downloads/
Download Image Pi-Star to your computer (latest version is ‘Pi-Star_RPi…..’) - open compressed file and extract it to your computer
5. Flash SD Card
Flashing deletes all of the data on the card and installs an operating system or other software onto the card
https://www.balena.io/etcher/
Download for MacOs - open Balena Etcher download - select ‘Flash from File’ - select Pi-Star Image that was just downloaded - select ‘Target’ (SD card) - click on ‘Flash’ - properly eject SD card and remove it from the computer (important to eject SD card because simply taking it out can corrupt what’s on SD card)
OR
Raspberrypi.com/software
Download Raspberry Pi Imager to your computer - launch downloaded software - select ‘choose OS’ - select ‘use custom’ - open saved Pi-Star Image that was just downloaded - choose SD card as your storage - click on ‘write’ - accept message ‘SD card will be wiped out’ - properly eject card and remove it from the computer (important to eject SD card, simply taking it out can corrupt what’s on SD card)
6. Insert SD card into your Raspberry Pi
Connect to your internet network with ethernet cable from Raspberry Pi to modem - power on Raspberry Pi - wait for hotspot to boot - open up web browser on your computer
http://pi-star.local to set up Pi-Star (see video Pt.2)
OR
Connect to your internet network though “Pi-Star-Setup” Access Point from your computer
https://www.pistar.uk/wifi_builder.php After entering SSID and PSK click on ’Submit’ - File will be downloaded to your computer - Copy and Paste this file or drag it to your SD card that has Pi-star on it - place SD Card into Raspberry Pi slot and turn on power - give few minutes to boot - open up new web browser and type
