I don't get it, the losses outweighs the gain by a mile, from what I see that's a very fertile land, why destroy it for little bit of sand, I mean why not just import the sand?

Anyone who believes this needs to actually do their research. There are no studies to even back this up. I live by numerous sand mines and they don't affect the environment. Literally all they are doing is digging out dirt. Also, if it is mined in an area with trees, the trees start to grow back after a few years. I know some old mines near me where the only reason you can tell they used to be a mine is because of the hills. Also, you can farm on the land again if you put topsoil down or wait about 20 years for it to be fertile enough. Sand mining doesn't destroy the environment, but Al Jazeera knows that people who know nothing about sand mining will believe this sensationalistic hype because of how the land looks for a period of time.

Sand mines don't pump chemicals like anhydrous ammonia into the ground year after year. Over tile fields so they dewater quicker and flood residents who live down stream and  have their fields so over tiled the local rivers are filling up with field silt. In the early winter and during harvest on windy days a person can hardly see roadways from all the turned over top soil and soil bean dust blowing around not to mention all the allergy suffers who can't hardly go outside during certain times of year due to all the crop pollination. And lastly, most of the mines within LaSalle County were started on farm land that was gladly sold to the mining companies by farmers for several thousand dollars per acre over prime.  So tell the entire story for a change please. Agriculture is just as damaging to our environment and none the less greedy.

So is farming. Killing trees & plants that the planets needs. Everyone needs to learn to be more self sufficient as was intended. Nature is fighting back hence floods, tsunamis, cyclones, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides etc
