Vlandia Unit Guide: Troops Ranked Worst to Best (UPDATED)

RE: Voulgier - StratGaming and ExodusLyon's videos on the shock troops are amazing and you guys should all check them out if you haven't! The two lads are pumping out AMAZING content for really good, number crunchy approaches to the units!

In my experience, the Voulgier - while a GREAT Shock troop (which I think I really understated, sorry guys) - should not be looked at as the mainstay of the army, replacing the Sergeant. It should, ideally, act as a strong addition and compliment to the Sergeant. Using an entire line of Voulgiers against say... Khuzait will result in a lot of casualties before you even make contact. Same thing goes with any army whose AI skews to heavy amounts of ranged units.

Answer? Use only cav and crossbows. 2/3 to 1/3 ratio.

The strategy with the pikemen is your suppose to put them behind your infantry or your crossbow men for the sole purpose of protecting there backs and flanks from Calvary

The druzhinik fall on a weird placing where they should have been the best infantry in the game, but instead they were pressed into being shock cavalry for the sturgians.

Personally, I think that the Best Army is one that can use any unit, and is willing to use any unit. There's something interesting to see Sturgia, Battania, Valandia, Khuzait, Aseria, Empire, Mercenary, Bandit, and Minor Faction troops all working together under one banner. Real trick is making sure that the Companions leading them have the perks needed, and having plenty of Companions to cover most everything - one-hand, two-hand, polearm, bow, crossbow, throwing, foot, and mounted.

Vlandia isn't meant to have great infantry. Their armies are defined by the famous Vlandian Steamroller (calvary charge), and supported by crossbowmen.

Remember kids - nothing beats good ol' horse archer spam

Bro imagine, your at war with you khuzaits you attack a group of 200 with your 320 troops, archers, then you see a group of 200 horse archers, and there all khana guard.

Vlandia is rough, they only win because of huge numbers but when you look at it. Fian>Sharpshooter, Elite Cataphract> Banner Knight, Falxman>Voulgier, Legionary>Sergeant. Vlandia doesn’t have the strongest unit from any category.

do you think the sergeants are better now that their spear is braceable?

The Vlandian Gallant is also an enormous money saver. At some point you need to provide a warhorse for your cavalry. With the empire noble line, it's at the upgrade from tier 3 to 4 when they become heavy horsemen. I think the other cavalry lines are similar on where they need that war horse. If you want to skip that, recruiting them at tier 4 is relatively rare. Gallants are relatively more common to recruit at tier 3 and they don't need anything but kills from that point on.

I use only sergeant and sharpshooter from regular Vlandian units. I am new to the game, and I noticed when I mixed them up, that the survivability of the voulgier or the pikeman are very low compare to the sergeant for my tactic at least.
Sergents are really good to break a cavalry charge, their shield and armor make them resistant to ranged troops but they are not good against infantry specially other tier 5. That's why I am using them to protect my ranged troops which are spamming infantries charges and I mix them with imperial tier 5 and battanian skirmisher. It does a good mix against all type of attack even hundred of palace guards who are really weak against ranged troops (specially sharpshooters)

Volgiers are good when just setting them to charge ngl, loose infantry fighting and for some reason kinda good at killing horsemen?(ofc only after the initial attack)

Anybody have any idea what happened to the Tier 3 Vlandian Infantry? It's still in the game, NPC armies and Garrisons sometimes field them. But you can't upgrade your units to it anymore. The only way to get them, apart from Cheat Mode, is by recruiting them from prisoner stacks...

It strikes me as odd that the voulge even made the cut to be included on the Vlandia unit tree. Vlandia seems to be based loosely off France or Norman England and the "voulge" wasn't as common in my country during this time. It was more popular in Germany and the Holy Roman client states. For France and Norman England the Men at Arms and Sergeants were the mainstay of most medieval field armies, or for Later England I would go with heavier archer classes.

I'd love it if each unit gets to shine in a certain way.

The swordsman and sergeant would be nice and different from the legionnaire by having no polearm but exceptionally high 1H skill and both a good sword and a mace. Then they'd actually need or synergise with a unit like pikeman, who could have above average polearm skill and the braceable pike. The voulgier would then have great damage and have a backup weapon. I love the crossbowmen, maybe a shield earlier to set them apart from archers?

If non noble cavalry only needed common horses, they'd not be spectacular in performance but have something to balance against noble lines that are always better in every way. They could be used as mounted versions, maybe even be used dismounted. Similarly the Drushnik could be a noble infantry that has a horse but favor athletics over riding.

The Battanians could have throwing, high athletics but low armor for most speed and a skirmishy play style.
The Sturgians could have high athletics too but have good but very heavy armor and shield, lots of throwing and axes.
The Aserai should have slightly weaker but very light armor and compensate with more weaponskill. Also slightly lower athletics so they'll be medium speed still.
The Khuzait could have the best (only decent non noble) cavalry, and decent gear but a slightly lower athletics foot troops (with a bunch of riding so they could mount up?) with the Darkhan a mix of shield and shock troop. If the non noble lines no longer need warhorses they might not even need a separate archer line.
The empire should have the best armored troops, but without athletics boost a bit slower.

You often need to replenish troops of your companion parties, and they tend to waste troops and/or donate them to garrisons. So often the question is which troops to give and which to cherish.

So istead of assuming a pure faction approach, maybe have an West, North and East army in mind (that lack troops that are far away) that mix what is close by. I would deal out low tier only to troops you'd dump unless you're desperate and high tier as troops to prioritise to keep, recruit or pick as prisoners.
You could have low tier troops you'd take an mass (sergeant?) and high tier troops you'd dump like any non noble cav (not worth war horses?).

Then make summary videos that discuss a whole line from tier 2 to 5 (or 3-6 for noble line) assuming a mix of tiers, say 20 20 30 30. I'd mix archers and crossbow into one video. One on shield infantry and one on shock troops, unless you want to emphasize how you'd mix them. Maybe types of play, emphasis on polearms or throwing or pure survivability or how well suited troops are for sieges.

Btw, when talking of armor a total of average armor number would be awesome!

Simply having the ability to separate units by type would jump Pikeman up so much.

This video came right on time. I was going for a 90% vlandian army style in my current campaign and I would never have guessed the sergeants are low tier. They still look badass tho!

empire is easier, every town have more loyalty. you can cross the pikeman with your horse and maybe swordman is enough to keep him in a team

Vlandian infantry needs a big buff. Not to the point where they are OP, but I'd say that there should be 3 mid tier infantry or 1 high, 1 mid, and 1 low tier unit.

That's the issue here. They need better equipment.

As an Imperial player I have to say the only good Vlandian is a dead Vlandian. Oathbreakers.

I have a question, Does this spear good for champions? Cuz u said a VouIgier's spear is crap. Its a smitted 275 max standard fine edition, so Iegendeary editon can be even better.

Man... i just love this game. Would've just been so cool if we got an option to start off the game with 100,000 Denars, 500,000 or even 1,000,000 Denars. That way, the tedious beginning won't feel as terrible.

I wonder if a unit of just pikemen, with your cavalry cross bowmen supporting would make the pikes better, as then they would be sure to have pikes out front.

Hello Spartacus, in these guides you do not address cost and or wage

Please make a guide wich units compositions are best for daily wages

500 a day (infantry ranged, cav)
800 a day
1200 a day
1750 a day

Of course play style differs yet maybe you can come up with cost effective armies wich we would like to copie. (maybe even address bandit troops, mercenaries etc)

How much does skill really matter? Is a difference of like 20 really enough to make a change in battle?

Voulgiers underrated, sergeant make a decent front line troop with their shield, just need to sit Voulgiers behind them somehow lol

Good content lately mate, its hard coming back to the game and all my favourites are weaker now haha these make it easy and keep the tier lists coming as well.

I keep having issue where I can't upgrade Vladian Footman into Vladia Light Cav, even with horses in my inventory (not just Sumpter horses) the system keep saying I do not have horse... anyone else having the same issue?
