Minister Shanmugam Clears the Air: No Involvement in TOC's AsiaOne Allegations!

On July 18th, 2023, local news publication AsiaOne published an interview with a man who claimed to be Leon Perera's former driver, just one day after the now-infamous video of Mr. Perera and Ms. Seah holding hands started circulating on social media. This rapid turnaround raised eyebrows and caught the attention of alternative news site The Online Citizen (TOC).

TOC was quick to question how AsiaOne managed to contact the ex-driver within such a short period. They even went further to seemingly suggest that Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam might have played a role in this, tipping off an AsiaOne employee about the driver's identity. However, it's essential to note that both Minister Shanmugam and AsiaOne firmly denied these allegations.

According to TOC, an AsiaOne employee named Edmund Chua was allegedly in contact with the driver for over a year. They highlighted Chua's volunteer commitments, particularly his role as a Data Analyst for Chong Pang Grassroots Organizations since 2008. This grassroots organization is headed by Minister Shanmugam, who is also the Member of Parliament for Chong Pang in Nee Soon GRC. However, it's important to emphasize that TOC did not explicitly accuse Minister Shanmugam, AsiaOne, or Mr. Chua of any wrongdoing.

Minister Shanmugam swiftly issued a statement denying any involvement in the incident and refuting TOC's suggestion that he tipped off AsiaOne about the driver's identity. He stated categorically that he does not know Mr. Perera's former driver and hasn't discussed the matter with Mr. Chua. In addition, Minister Shanmugam clarified that his visit to AsiaOne's office occurred on June 13th, almost a month before the video leaked, and he had been overseas for a week before the incident surfaced.
