LNER A4 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' hauls the final Settle & Carlisle Fellsman of 2024 and what better place to see it than over the famous Ribblehead Viaduct although it's real name is Batty Moss viaduct. As usual the wind was howling which is no surprise as it one the most exposed locations across the British railway network. Once the A4 had passed through Ribblehead the loco was opened up nicely as it headed past another famous railway location, that is Blea Moor. The lonely situated signal box seems to had a new lick of paint and the derelict house may still be for sale ??
For the return run there would be more fine scenery on offer as we capture Gresley rounding the curve at Smardale and then high up at Waitby Common as the A4 breezes up the lower climb towards Ais Gill. Speed is generally a lot slower at these locations but 60007 had the benefit of a non stop run through Appleby, so it's progress was good. For the brief and final time we witness No7 rounding the curve towards Wilpshire Summit. So this was our first video since July and it was great to be back out again and No7 seemed to perform well on its very heavy train. The smart looking class 57 on the rear are quite noisy locos so don't be fooled into thinking that its shoving the majority of the train. My understanding is that it operates on lower power which in turn takes its own weight and allows the steam to pull the weight of the coaches in the consist. This seems to be the future for steam going forwards on the mainline. Anyway, I hope you stunning vistas which are on display and of course No7 Sir Nigel Gresley !
