Camilla is in rural Cambridgeshire with one shopkeeper who says theft is costing his business £12,000 a year - and he’s about to be clobbered by Labour’s Budget, too.

Shopkeepers on middle-class high streets are tying down their goods amid a shoplifting epidemic.

The crime is at record-high levels, with an estimated 55,000 thefts per day last year, according to recent statistics. Industry bodies complain that police are failing to tackle the problem.

The Telegraph has visited high streets across the country and found businesses having to tie down their goods, install panic buttons under counters and operate a “locked door policy” under which customers are only admitted after ringing a doorbell.
