Hilary Hahn - V. Williams "The Lark Ascending"

A soulless interpretation that shows no understanding at all of the traditions this piece was written in. She's an incredible violinist, but this piece is not for her.

This heavenly music from Ralph Vaughan-Williams remains pure magic and a balm for the human soul, a sort of immersion in the music and nature of the lush and green English countryside, a remote call, far away from everyday´s madness, back to the blessings of good Mother Nature ... Compared to other interpretations, I appreciate Hilary´s pureness of tone and in particular her perfect intonation of the highest notes (which often sound too high in those of other violinists), showing that she is not just a highly skilled violinist but also the owner of a remarkably well-tuned pair of ears ... Bravo Hilary !!

I'm 60 and new to this. Heard it on a film track I watched this evening, 'Joy'. Beautiful. I heard it and thought it must be an English composition. It just has to be as it gave me the impression of an English countryside. There were no surprises when I found RVW was behind it. ❤

I once heard her play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. She did not add notes, she did not embellish it, she did not make it about her, but it was sweet and gentile with emotion flowing underneath.
Listen to her do Mendelssohn Violin Concerto E Minor OP.64. It's easy to imagine, at the end, Mendelssohn hugging her.

Words are inadequate to describe the sheer obscenity of running an advertisement
right in the middle of this remarkable performance of Vaughn Williams masterpiece.
Fortunately for me (and not the on-line audience), I was able to snuff it out in a tiny
fraction of a second. Having explored the Internet from its beginning in the 1970s,
I have watched it deteriorate from miraculous medium to open sewer of hucksterism
and propaganda -- a fitting epitaph for the human race.

I found this piece several years ago by way of a very different British composer, Kate Bush. In her lovely song Prologue she asks "can you see the lark ascending?" It felt like a quote.

Hilary does not capture the feeling of Lark Ascending, but she accurately plays the notes as they are intended, and that gives the illusion that she captures the feeling. It's kind of an interesting solution.
