M4 vs M4 Pro Mac mini - HOW is the $600 mini THIS Good?!

I need the pro just for the fun of it.

I dont think its just china. The korean experience sounds similar, so does japan.

Unfortunately, the Mini M4 Pro, runs at at 109 degrees C, and the fans noise level is 45 decibels, with any kind of serious processing apps. The size of the case is just too small to install the proper cooling technology, so the components lifespan is severely reduced. But hey it fits in your pocket , you can buy another one in two years , so what's the problem ? (Apples overriding consideration)

I Just tried building a new Mac mini. One is M4 and other is M4pro…Same specs…but results in 900$ plus tax difference between the Apple M4 chip with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine AND Apple M4 PRO chip with 14‑core CPU, 20‑core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine. Both would have 24GB unified memory512GB SSD storage10 Gigabit Ethernet (and thunderbolt 5 not 4). The difference between m4 and m4 pro is: 4 core cpu, 10 core gpu 4 core neural engine as and thunderbolt… asking myself is it worth the extra 900$+????

idk if im understanding these scores properly because my lenovo legion pro 5i was almost spec for spec perfect except for cinebench multicore... my multi core was 24057

What about memory bandwidth differences? The pro has more than twice the bandwidth and also significantly higher ssd speeds. That should reflect in real world performance for stuff like opening apps, etc

it is $1000 vs $1400 if you choose the same storage and TAM between the 2 models. 256 GB storage is too little.

I’m a bit cynical you didn’t that so the base M4 Pro as well - it would be more useful to know base spec than bumped spec, both preferably tbh but I’d take base or bumped. It just looks like you wanted the biggest numbers to show rather than showing the most useful information

For me, this is pretty useless. I am a photographer, I use Bridge, ACR, Ps. If you take your 200 raw files, I think LrC can export them in bulk to a new folder, creadig PSDs so do that. Or load them into a stack in Ps. Don't bother aligning them, but create a smart object, stack mode mean. This approximates something I want to do, but I might want to do 2K and more, and my camera is 47.3 megapixels, unless I shoot high resolution in which case it's 80 Mpx other cameras) and up.

I' suspect the base M4 falls well short, and that the M4 Pro is suspect.

Sounds like if the m4 stock had a better cooler it would have much better performance.

I have a gaming channel with Mac mini M1 (very light) and from the release of these mini I’m thinking of upgrading.
Having the idea to start doing some live and some streams, in your opinion the basic model can be enough, or is it necessary to go directly to the pro model?
Sorry for the question, but I don’t know what impact a stream or live on the Mac could have without having tested it...

I just ordered the M4 base with 512GB drive for $699 and got a Samsung S9 5k display for $499 - on Amazon now… amazing sales downside is delivery timeline but so worth the wait!

I wanted the next studio and budget around 3k. I ended up getting Mac mini with highest pro chip and 48gb of ram with 1Tb little over 2k. Absolutely worth it like you said. For me it was like saving a grand.

It’s a shame the number of encoders is the same when the Pro chip is a step up from the regular

Is the M4 Mac Mini good enough for Lightroom, Photoshop and adobe illustrator and Gopro then? I would like it to last at least ten years (concerned with increasing AI in Photoshop etc..) Using Raw Camera files. And if I just need the M4 Mini, how much memory should I add? Great video, thx.

I got the pro 16/20 with max ram. I only buy a Mac machine every 5 or 6 years and I max them out. This future proofs them.

If it's not prohibitive to your wallet - spend it. Buy the pro.

If you buy a Mini Pro, and you need keyboard and mouse, bear in mind the same Macbook pro M4 pro is only 300-400$-Euro more expensive, and you get a battery and a screen...

Pro tip: If you live in colder climate (like Sweden): Put the Mac Mini on the floor to max out cold airflow.

I used the wrong SSD on the Base M4...As 512 is where the speed increase comes from. So just pay for th e2nd tier M4 Mini and be done with it. Unless you are a real content creator. Which means you would be paying for the NAS 10GB upgrade..

This may be something you are already testing, but will there be a MacMini M4 Pro 12core vs 14core comparison? Really curious if two less P-cores may take care of some of that thermal throttling.

How about Sony video formats like XAVC HS 4K 422 120fps video editing timeline on FCP ? A bit of luts, effects, denoising on a roughly 3-7mins video timeline ? Will the base model Mac mini m4 be enough for a smooth scrolling playback ? No proxies.

I bought the M4 Pro Mac Mini for $1139, before tax, at Micro Center so I am happy with it. Yes, it is about twice as expensive as the base M4 Mini and I think it is worth it.

I was thinking of buying the M4 Pro base but was also in two minds about updating the CPU. I’ll make my decision when Max’s reviews the M4 Pro with a 12-core chip V 14 core.
Personally, I still think the Pro is still good value if you have the budget.

That low bass thumping in the background is really irritating and does not to help your message.

The problem is the ridiculously low storage and if you want to future-proof your Mac Mini M4, you need more RAM and storage. Both of those upgrades will double the cost of the base model. This is absolutely intolerable and I wish more people would make a point of criticising Apple about this underhanded upgrade scheme. The base model is really only for entry-level newbies, not power users.

glaringly loud fans... hold my dell 2950s... now 8x20k spinning fans, that is glaringly loud - that M4 Pro at max fan speed is white noise to sleep too...
