This video describes the basic structure of a bacterial cell wall. All bacteria cells have at least a few, if not many, layers of peptidoglycan. In it, sugars are linked together in multiple rows. Protein cross-links (vulnerable to antibiotic action) connect the layers. Lysozyme can break the sugar connections. Gram negative bacteria have an outer lipid layer in addition to peptidoglycan layers. Most bacterial pathogens have capsules to prevent phagocytosis and potentially to aid in adherence and invasion. www.sciencewithsusanna.com has diagrams, notes, and practice questions.
