For consumers wireless internet 🛜 is best 💙 and perfect👌 practically viable

Fiber optics are used and applications by Tele communication companies and data center tech companies

Fiber to every home is a criminal conversation. A single pair of SM fiber can easily service a small neighborhood. Add in satellite alternatives such as StarLink, and that neighborhood could have better connectivity than a metro suburb. The technology exists for great options to be debated, but too often, it's the uninformed making decisions between interested parties options.

The great thing about fiber is once it is actually installed it can handle almost any speeds just by simply changing the equipment on either end and leaving the fiber alone.

Of course this creates pricing issues as they do not want to sell too much speed for too little money.

There are a few companies providing. In the Northeast, Verizon does fiber to the house, previously fiber to the curb. Advertisements indicate a residential customer can get a 2Gbps connection for around $100

We wouldn't have seen this development under Trump. Trump's FCC wanted to make 5G the standard because it would have been more cost-effective than extending fiber infrastructure to areas where they have none.

I think 5G is adequate for most people's bandwidth usage. I think a roll out of fiber is for most people a waste. Investment into wireless signals is so much more important.

There must be continued benefits in using this tech today. Could it be a redundancy issue on just relying on Satellite internet, is it to control a future monopoly situation (where there are only a few Satellite Internet providers). Is it based on limitations with satellite, fibre is said to be faster than satellite. I guess if America is going down this path (massive country, massive population) then Australia and its NBN fibre choice, is possibly a good solution for Australia.

Usa is still kind of 3rd world in internet speed and cost for internet.

In Sweden we have pure fiber and i pay 13 usd/month for PURE 1 gbit internet (1000/1000 mbit ) 90% of the sweeds have access to pure fiber in sweden since well 15 years back and about 18-19usd/month for unlimited 5 g mobile.

Better late than never. For 15 years US was lagging way behind Europe or East Asia. In US a lot of monopolies, greed plus size of the country, made things horrible. But it looks like things are changing. Fiber is a good investment that should scale in the future. Still a lot of companies last mile deployments are not that great, and probably not scale beyond 10G, where in many places in Europe and Asia, they will easily do 100G, due to different technical methods, and how fiber is shared between different providers.

Cheers, from Switzerland, where I do have 25Gbps connectivity for almost 2 years. Bottlenecks are now in other places, like internet exchanges, still often stuck at 10G. (But that will very soon change as 25G and 100G hardware is really getting cheap).

Corning and Dow Corning and Corning Asahi and Bell and AT&T and Bell Atlantic and Bell Atlantic/NYNEX Mobile and finally Verizon have been promising nationwide or at least east coast or northeast region or northeast and mid atlantic fiber to the community or fiber to the pole or fiber to the home implementations since at least the late 1980s/early 1990s.

there was also a secure over the air modem technology run by a company called Clear in north carolina around 2010 that sprint or at&t invested in/bought out and killed off shortly there after

there was also a concept i learned about in college around 2006-2008 called Wi-Max that the industry has available but never implemented.

the telecommunications industry has a long history of seeking public funding and getting funding from the public directly, from their customers, from their business customers, from all levels local state and federal governments, and additional funding from the stock market and from private investors and from the department of defense....all to improve the us internet infrastructure

but then they just sit on the money and do nothing with it whilst declaring record profits and buybacks of stock and dividends to investors and telling the accountability people that the money was spent and they dont know what ever could have happened to it it just went/spent already somehow into the ether or was eaten up by budget/supply cost creep, etcetera....

so nothing ever seems to get done to actually improve the infrastructure.... unless you contract specifically and directly with them and are a business customer and specify exactly what you want or have your own contractors lay the cable and just have the telecoms come in and inspect/approve/do final installation, then things get done in a somewhat timely manner, but basically you have to have people on the ground standing over the shoulder of the telecom employees it feels like at every level of the telecom company business to get anything done.

until just since the covid pandemic in 2019 2020 2021, most of the us didnt even have access to the 100mbps ethernet level connection speeds that colleges/universities have largely had since the 1980s and 1990s right to people's dorm rooms.

linus sebastian up in canada had gigabit level fiber connection straight to his business like 5+ years ago now...the us is even falling behind hicksville middle of nowheresville canada it seems.

most of the us isnt even up to cat5e ethernet cable standards yet.

Europe is faster in implementation of good regulations or services, satellites are not slow, costly maybe but not that costly then laying down fiber optics all over world that is expensive also... satellite doesn't have hurdles of mountains or unreachability through some obstructions. i am not saying fiber is bad but if it has hurdles of being laid down then it is problem.

It's so crazy to know that the USA is so behind it when we talk about fiber adoption. In Brazil, for instance, you can go to a small poor city in the northeast of the country and see improvised mini houses connected by 2 cables to a pole: the first one is a thin cable of copper for electricity, that could support no more than 30 or maybe 40 amps if you are lucky. The other one is fiber, probably running at 300+ Mbps down and 150+ up for around $15 USD/month.
