Very nice white spot guitar fish (not a shovel nose) supposedly great eating but possibly endangered in certain areas. Great fish regardless. Have caught some decent sized ones in the past. Good on ya mate

Here in SA we call them Kob or more traditionally, Kabeljou.....
It's actually a dumb fish.
With that being said, if you can't read water (aspesh color), gutters or reef, you won't catch them. But here in Valsbaai (Cape Town) they will take most fish baits, chokka, worms, mussels and prawn. Best bait is naturally chokka, bloodworm and fish baits (like mullets or red eyes).

Catching them on dingle dangles with circle hooks is pretty easy.....

We have so many sought after species here that is 100 times more difficult to catch for example real big Steenbras. Targeting a Steenbras of 12+kg is no easy task.... Landing them is a completely different story. Insanely strong fighting fish!

Still a very nice fish that you landed pal! All fisherman dream of landing healthy, breeding stock like that.

I always encourage all to release any Kob of a meter +.....
They only start breeding once they are big fish. A few small ones for the pan is totally fine but those big guys needs to be returned to the water.

I believe it's a skate, neither a shark nor a ray! But closely related to both :D

We used to use the same type of snell rig that you rigged up, for salmon in the Pacific Northwest of the US. We would cut the bait at the same angle you did but compounded at about 30° also. The single hook through the lead of the bait fish, And the second to loosely trail behind. Any nibblers will find out the hard way. Today we can only fish one single barbless hook, and so cannot use the snell rig anymore.
The shovel knows shark that you caught looks a lot like a cross between a shark, and a sturgeon]!
