Help! My aunt is caught up in this SAME EXACT SCAM!! Same exact playbook, down to the fake check. She’s been manipulated beyond listening to any logic or the mountain of evidence presented by loved ones. Anyone know how to get a hold of Connie? Station wouldn’t call me back (I’m in Michigan).. Maybe talking to someone my aunt’s age would get her to snap out of it? Plus - I suspect it’s the same crime org, let’s bust these people!

I've come across romance scammers myself. I haven't fallen for them, but I have noticed some common traits that are inherent to them. Here's a list.

1. Fake profiles. They often use images from the internet to look beautiful or handsome. Luckily, there are ways to do reverse image search (e.g. Google Lens) so if the search gives other results, it's obviously fake, and you should leave ASAP.

2. Asking for money and/or gift cards. Whatever the topic is, they always end up asking for your money, whether through transfers or gift cards. They may not ask for a lot at first, but as they gain your trust, they start asking for more and more, and before you even realise, you may have lost more money than you could expect. And once they have got enough from you, they usually just leave, leaving you broke and heartbroken.

3. Being too perfect for you. If your "lover" seems to be a 100% perfect match, it's a HUGE red flag! No one can ever be 100% perfect for you so if someone seems too good to be true, it's for the best to leave.

4. Being different every time you talk. That's because more than often, there may be not one but several people behind one account, and more than often, they are talking to multiple victims at once. Hence they forget what they have told you in the past, and may even say quite the opposite to you after some time. For example, they may claim to have one job one day, but a different one another day.

5. Finding excuses to procrastinate meeting you in person. While they give you hope to meet one day, they always find excuses not to meet in near future, often claiming that they don't have enough money to get to you. If that happens, it's an OBVIOUS sign that it's a scam!

6. Avoiding (video) calls. They may avoid calls. That's because they need to conceal their true identity from you. However, they can also have good voice actors so even if they call you, you can't be sure that it's not a scam.

7. Broken language. They often speak broken English or they may even attempt to speak your own language if it's not English, and claim to have their roots in your country. However, they make a lot of grammatical mistakes which makes it obvious that it's not right.

Of course, there are other points to keep in mind. But most importantly: NEVER EVER send money to someone you've met online! That's the best way to avoid being scammed. Stay safe!

Someone tried to scam me on The local Craigslist. They sent me a check for an antique I was selling and said they would pick up the item in a week. It was made out for FAR TOO MUCH. They immediately asked me for a refund of the overage...claiming the secretary made it out for too much by mistake. They said I could keep an extra two- hundred dollars for my trouble if I immediately refunded them. I deposited the check but decided to wait until the check cleared before refunding them. Guess what...it was fake.
