Although King Phillip's aria is rather high in terms of bass writing and bass singing, it was still too deep for Krause, who sounds here like he was unnaturally darkening and weighting his sound. But he was certainly a major artist.

An excellent bass-baritone that was closer to the lower, darker baritone that sings mostly between the G and the f#.
The Verdi baritone, also sometimes called a bass-baritone because of the darker timbre required, sings a tone higher between the A and the g#.
Filippo requires a high bass/a low bass-baritone who sings between F and the f, like in the cadenza.
Finally it is a question of comfort and timbre rather than range, in my humble opinion.

Tom's Filippo is actually better than his Prince Ottokar.
