Love your videos. I will watch this later. I personally use backblaze plus hyperbackup for irreplaceable data. It's cheap and seems reliable so far. Plus, I utilize snapshots from your previous tutorials, you've really helped me with my Nas.
ОтветитьRex
My offsite backup should be online today. The lesser model can't do btrs replication, right?
I have a DS720+ and bought DJ220 for the offsite backups.
There's no replication app available for the DJ220, so I expect replication backup is not possible.
Backblaze are a bunch of muppets.. Their support hardly speak english & totally useless....
ОтветитьGreat vid Willy
ОтветитьWill, do you have an in-depth tutorial on Hyper Backup? That scheduling of a test of your backup sounds intriquing.
ОтветитьSynology c2 it is
Ответитьwith chia mining, hard drives have doubled in cost. wtf
ОтветитьC2 is the best backup solution for home users. Additionally to snapshots on the local nas.
Ответитьhow about the way to do it on an Asustore?
ОтветитьSynology has something called USB Copy. For those who want to just plug in an external drive and setup a scheduled backup using USB Copy. It will run backups based on the schdule you setup. It's pretty awesome!
ОтветитьThank you!
ОтветитьI don't see the point in serving 4K video here.
ОтветитьI never thought of back-ups, because I leaned too much on my RAID 6 (SHR2). But after listening 👂 to SpaceRex 😉 I think I will be going with Linear Tape Open (also called, LTO).
Presently, LTO is at LTO-8, which is at 12TB, per tape (WOW is Right! 😳🤯),
So I figure that I’ll need only about 5 or 6 tapes, to backup my entire array.
I’d rather wait, till LTO-9, which takes things up to 18TB per tape, but due to the Pandemic, I heard this has been “delayed.”
So I may [still] go with LTO-8, which I hear the company OWC (Google them) has a VERY good “drag & drop” LTO-8 system.
I’ll then take my 5/6 tapes, and place them in my Gun safe, then bury in the back of my lawn (I call this, “Hill-Billy OFF-Site” 😂👍).
Anyway, thanks again, for another good vid 👍
Excellent!
ОтветитьIs it safe to have offsite backup to Raspberry PI with external storage with rsync and HyperBackup? If hackers will get access to my administrative account on my NAS somehow ... is there a way to encrypt or damage the data on Pi offsite backup? I followed your tutorial on how to create offsite backup with Pi and didn't think about cloud solution because of quite huge amount of data which I want to store, that's why I want to be sure that my data on offsite backup is safe in this case. Thx
ОтветитьiT'S NOT RANSOMWARE, IT'S THE IDIOTS WHO FORGOT TO BACKUP.
ОтветитьSpaceRex love the channel, so many helpful areas covered. Given NAS often don’t work with modems well unless they are in Bridge mode, could you do a video on the advantages and disadvantages of connecting in this way and which rioters and firewall choices work best? Would be awesome if you would cove this? If not no worries and thanks for the awesome channel!
ОтветитьI just upgraded to a 1621+ from a 720+. Is it possible to connect the 720+ to the 1621+ using eSATA, and just treat the 720+ as an offline backup?
ОтветитьHey, great channel,
I was wondering if you can recommend any specific hard drives (like seagate iron wolf, wd red or gold,...)
for cold Storage. I need to backup around 20-30 TB of photo data.... that’s also why c2 is a bit too expensive for me right now...
Also another question about the off-site synology for backup - I guess u use that one as a non raid device writing on one hdd after the other so you can still access the data on the drives even if the device breaks.... if possible?
Offsite here in Australia is a PITA due to the poor upload speeds on most internet plans, even the (crap) new NBN.
Backblaze is a nice option for us as they allow a drive(s) to be sent to them as a starter to then do incremental updates to.
my setup is synology hyperbackup to freenas using webdav. getting acceptable backup speed.
ОтветитьWell, that's something that i'm thinking for a long time (besides my local backups) but i haven't been able to decide what service to use.
Some praise for Synology C2 Storage, other Backblaze, and other iDrive.
My main concern is my NAS (to backup my Windows, i would need two different services, at least with Synology: C2 Storage to the NAS and C2 Backup to Windows).
Also, since i live in Europe, the drive shipment option is not a selling point.
I understand that Synology's solution must be the better integrated one with a Synology NAS, but at the same time it makes me wonder about putting all eggs on the same basket.
Really don't know what to choose. 🤦
Based on my usage, I really only need to backup my NAS monthly but seems the longest interval in hyperbackup is weekly. Is there a way to do this monthly?
ОтветитьI’m a new user who last few days setup a New NAS a DS1520+. I watched the video and I’m still not sure how to actually backup my NAS.
Ответить..so backing up my computer data onto a nas...isnt back up?? i kinda feel like it is... offsite is just an extra backup...
ОтветитьThank you so much. You gave me a BIG tip about the safe deposit box for placing my offsite backup so I don't have to go to someone's home all the time to pick it up.
ОтветитьCan you please make a video on DSM7 how to backup TrueNAS to Synology? I tried doing it with setting up SSH but it's just not working.
ОтветитьI've been trying to think of an affordable backup strategy for the NAS I'm going to buy next year, my first NAS, and the best solution so far is the USB drive solution which I can store in a SAFE hidden at home or in an off site security box. The offsite NAS solution is almost the same as the USB drive. Even if you get a "cheap" used NAS, drives don't come cheap so at that point I see the USB drive backup solution much more affordable.
ОтветитьVery helpful advice! Thank you. I have a question: I'm thinking about buying 2 external drives and swap them once a month. This would mean I always have an active backup as well as an offline backup. Do I need to set up two different backup setups or will it work with only one? And will this strategy work at all?? Thank you!
ОтветитьSpaceRex, do you feel C2 is also good for backing up my wife's TimeMachine on the Synology NAS. The most critical issues for me are her TimeMachine backup, and my photos(maybe about 500 photos in total). I also have some documents to back up but the data is very small on those. I have been using Backblaze B2, but their backup protocol seems too technical for the average home user, like myself. I am guessing that my backup including my wife's TimeMachine is less than 2TB and more than 1TB.
Oh wait: C2 is effectively limited to 1TB. With my wife's TimeMachine backup I am most likely over 1TB. Thanks, John
Backup the backup to your backup NAS!
ОтветитьYou would think there would be a native Synology app that will let you backup your NAS to your iCloud drive. FFS.
Because there isn't you have to have a sodding iCloud subscription which you pay for as well as another 3rd party repository, so you pay twice.
Hi Rex, can i backup my NAS Synology to windows server incrementally?
ОтветитьI was watching this video attempting to backup my DS1819+, I got about 3 TB into the backup and one of my 14TB WD Red drives failed. Ordered a new one from WDC this morning. Submitted a warranty replacement request just now. The drive was still in warranty. Fingers crossed they honor the warranty.
ОтветитьQuick question - who’s Neil??
Ответитьthe average person is screwed, because this has and continues to be convoluted
ОтветитьThank You for a great tutorial.
ОтветитьHi, great videos, very helpfull. wouild you be able to help with a solution to back-up 3rd party package/application data files? the files are stored on the root directory of the NAS so cant access through hyper backup or snapshot replication i believe. would be great to automate the config files to be backed-up on a regular schedule. Thanks
ОтветитьHi Rex, Synology just came out with an extension to the ABFB to backup the whole NAS., Any chance of a video on it?
ОтветитьI learn something every time I watch this guys videos, well done
ОтветитьHow can you back up a Synology to a Windows PC?
ОтветитьCan you do a video on "partial backups" -- I've connected to an external USB drive, and NAS is showing "partial success", that some folders were skipped (but there are none when I open the list). Maybe this could be a deep drive for when things don't always backup and work properly.
ОтветитьI see so many videos about backing up your Nas, but what about for the home user who uses their Nas to back up their other computers. I've been searching and searching for a video that will show how to backup computer system images to my Nas. I am using TRUENAS core, and would really like to know how to set it up what is the best configuration for backing up system images, not files...i do that with my own custom rsync scripts...just large system image backups from each computer (Windows or Linux). Your how to backup Mac with Time machine video was invaluable to me great video. Hope one day you can make one showing how to backup system images. 👍
ОтветитьReally appreciative of offering up these tutorials. Regarding security, before I subscribed, made many crucial setup errors, which, thanks to Spacerex, have all been rectified! Will keep watching and learning!
ОтветитьIm on this one !
ОтветитьRaid is NOT a Backup
this is why i dont give two shit about raid5,6/ zfs1,2,3
just do the blasphemy Raid 0 then backup the whole thing to another NAS lol
those raid rebuilding is stupid slow anyway, just replace the disks, remake another raid 0, copy files over from backup NAS
done.
The emphasis on an extra backup for the most crucial data is a really good tip. I was focused on an all-or-nothing solution (what's the cheapest way to backup all of my data?) and didn't even consider that.
