My personal preference is the Konya/Amara recording of the 1960's. The principal singers are endowed with voices expressive of each character's personality traits and react to dramatic situations in an appropriate manner. This recording does rank with the RCA in this manner. I just like the singers in the RCA a bit better. Domingo, Norman, etc, have also turned in a beautiful account here. Konya's grail knight always seemed to present the best balance of assertiveness and otherworldly charisma which is apt to Lohengrin's character. Otherwise, how lucky are we to have two such recordings as these????
ОтветитьLove Jessye Norman
ОтветитьDomingo's command of this role is magical. He sang it early in his career, likely a bit too early, as is usually true for all tenors taking on Wagner, but after taking a break, his return to it is glorious. The beauty of his voice is so well suited to Wagner and this role in particular. While Norman is a force of nature and an opera figure of great stature, I found her a bit over the top in this role. We have this in our library and recommend it.
ОтветитьLet us not forget Eva Randova! I saw her sing Ortrud on stage 2 times and on both occasions, she blew the roof off with her invocation to the old gods.
