These descriptions enable Blind or Low Vision people to engage with the artworks and participate in the discussion or the art-making workshops. Listen to these spoken, visual descriptions below. They are also an opportunity for sighted people to read or listen to the description and to think about whether they notice the same elements in the artworks.
The artworks were created during the programme Toi Ako. Toi Ako was an arts programme developed by Connect the Dots where older people living in care, work with practising artists to create new works of art. The works were created over 8 months by 13 emerging elder artists (aged 56-91) accompanied by works of their mentors.
Our Kaumātua are from all over Tāmaki Makaurau, from Papakura to Wiri to Mangere to Epsom to Blockhouse Bay to Henderson! They are Betty Geraerts, Beverley Blewett, Colin Rowe, Cynthia Rubena, Eric Pritchard, Jean Ebsworth, Joan Turner, Josephine Shephard, Joyce Deed, Mark Devcich, Pam Sherlock, Puasau Isaia, Rangi Lawrence.
Our Artist Mentors are all trained and practising artists with experience of teaching visual arts: Alexis Neal, Linda Roche, Lucie Blazevska, Toni Mosley, Yukari Kaihori, and Zoe Nash.
