ِAmazing video, I'm really love how you displayed all angles of Askelad's character in a perfectly balanced way. He truly was a nuanced character, that we might have disliked at the beginning but grew to like as the story progressed. I think it resembles certain characters we meet in our life, who are not wholly bad, but not wholly good either.

Great video, I know you read kasane and I would love to see a deep dive into that manga, since I feel nobody talks about it.

I remember finishing the first arc of the manga and thinking "damn Askeladd's dead, so i guess that means Thorfinn is the main character again? Jeez Yukimura has a lot of work ahead of him if he wants me to love Thorfinn as much as Askeladd." Then multiple volumes later and I did. Hell now I love Thorfinn even more and im not totally caught up as I read physical but damn, Askeladd is still one of my favorite anime/manga characters and somebody who i consider to be more a deuteragonist rather than an antagonist.

Askeladd has to be one of the best written characters ever, I actually cried when he died just because of the impact he’s had on thorsfinn and the last words he gave him before dying. I’ve never felt a character being both the protagonist and antagonist at the same time, that shows how good his character was written.

The fact that Askeladd felt more like a person rather than a villain as the story progressed. And the story constantly giving constant curveballs on whether you should see him as good or evil in his ways makes him my favorite antagonist in animanga.

Askeladd is just a totally brutal realist. You can hate how ruthless he is, but you can never say he isn't clear eyed about his situation and goals. Even at the end, he understood that he would never be the king or leader of Wales, and the only way to protect Wales would be to sacrifice himself.

I thought that with him being out of the story i wouldn't be interested in continuing Vinland Saga. Happy to say I was wrong!

There are no enemies in Vinland, therefore no villain.

Thorfinn was very unlikable in the Prologue. Thors, Thorkell, Askelaad, Canute, his father, Bjor. These are the good characters of the Prologue. Thorfinn is the best character for the rest of the story though.

If I had to point out an issue with the premise, it's that you don't need to morally agree with a character or relate to them to find them likeable.
In my case, I don't need to have my morals affirmed by a fictional character. What I want is for the character to be interesting, to find themselves in or generate interesting situations, to be a vehicle to explore themes in interesting ways and so on. Hell, not only that, there are plenty of characters whom I completely agree with in values and at the same time couldn't wait for them to get off the screen because they are so bland or frustrating in one way or another.

While a villain is often made to be hated, or for the audience to love to hate, that's also much further from being a rule than many believe. I mean, we all love the Joker from the Dark Knight, but other than having some good points on society and being a tactical genius, he's utterly reprehensible, but by God is he fun and interesting to watch, way more than the title character. Despite his depravity, I personally never hated the Joker.

Askeladd is a - kind of - villainous character, though it's a bit harder to easily judge him as such considering the time period the story occurs in, and even some of the crap Thorfinn does. Regardless, I never hated him either. He was super engaging to watch talk his way through things, plan his actions, philosophise on different topics, and reveal the nuances to his persona. I never lost sight of what kind of character he was, but it's just that. He's a character, not a real person. If he were real, I would probably hate him. As a character in a story, I adore him.

Overall, I think it's a flawed premise to assume a more relatable character, one way or another, would be more likeable than a less relatable one, or that they would even be likeable at all. The opposite also holds true for all the unrelatable assholes in fiction. At the end, it's all about how INTERESTING the character is. That's why so many people love characters like Askeladd.

I seldomly listen to soundtrack from Vinland saga and also i replay the scene between askellad and thors where he asks him to be their leader. That scene and also Thorfinns scene where he gets cut up and tlaks about having no positive thing happen to him, later on getting challenged by snake having visions of askelad is a great emotional moment. Somehow it makes me dwell on the meaning of being human... There are much more things to learn and read to understand it all better :)

Askeladd embodies a shrewd Warrior King. Him being nothing but a mercenary, albeit a very good one, feels so wasted. His ancestry, his ability, being battle harden and incredibly intelligent. He honored his deals and moved intelligently to solve problems. I don't like his death cause as you say he's basically the protagonist of the show not Thorfinn. And for me the show loses all steam once he dies. But I get his death. But you really do root for this idea of him eventually taking up the mantle of King of Britannia. Even if it'd be alt history. Cause we know it ain't going to happen. Almost makes you wish the setting was fantasy with made up titles. But I guess it being in our world makes the reveal of him being the descendant of King Arthur mean more.

What is that ending OST? Its just somber and beautiful.
