My notes

Manifest Destiny

- July 1845 John Oak Sullivan coined the term Manifest Destiny; Americans have a God given right to have a nation from the Atlantic to the pacific

- Westward Expansion Reasons
>More access to minerals and natural resources; 1848 California Gold Rush; Many migrated west
>New economic and homestead opportunity; mostly middle class
>Religious persecution; Mormons migrated to Utah due to persecution

- James K Polke - 11th president
>Huge supporter of manifest destiny
>Had eyes on Texas and Oregon
>Mexico passed laws in Texas that forced conversion to roman Catholicism and outlawed slavery; most Texans were U.S. immigrant farmers
>U.S. immigrants revolt against Mexican government with the leadership of Sam Houston; 1836 declared Texas as an independent
>Alamo; Mexican victory killed every defending american
>Battle of Sanjacinto; Sam Houston army victory capturing the Mexican general; forced general to sign a treaty making Texas independent; he didn't have the authority
>Jackson and Van Buren both declined annexing Texas due to possibility of war

- Oregon Territory
>U.S. and British debating over territory
>James K Polke wanted Oregon, Texas, and California
>Agreement with british to devide oregon territory at the 49th parallel
>Annexation of TExas leads to U.S.-Mexico War

Fact: The General was the new ruler of Mexico - Santa Anna.
Fact 2: Mexico didn't exactly abolish slavery in Texas, as Steven F. Austin convinced Mexico about it.
Fact 3: Texas was also mad that Mexico merged them with Cohuila.

Essentially everything he said in note form (sorry format is kind of messed up but anyways here it is):
Topic 2:
-July of 1845 gave American impulse for westward expansion a name: Manifest Destiny
-What is it: To possess the whole continent from sea to shining sea/coast to coast
-Who gave it: Providence/God
-Idea is that Americans have a God-given right to take over land from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean (and later, more)
-Needed for:
-More access to minerals and natural resources
-Discovery of gold in California: Gold Rush
-More migration west
-More economic + homestead opportunities
-Preemption Acts of 1830s + 1840s
-Religious refuge
-Mormons
-James K. Polk was a big believer in Manifest Destiny
-Wanted Texas + Oregon
-Texas had 3x more Americans than Mexicans by 1830
-Most of these Americans were Southern, Protestant, and slaveowners or sympathizers to slavery
-In 1829 Mexican government made two requirements for immigrants living in Mexico
-Must convert to Roman Catholicism + slavery outlawed
-Americans initially ignored the laws
-Mexico shut down border to further immigration in response
-American immigrants kept coming
-In 1834, Mexico had a change in government w/ dictator Santa Anna now the leader
-Decided to enforce the laws
-Rebelled under Sam Houston + claimed to be an independent republic in 1836
-Mexican gov't sent forces and had battles at Alamo (loss for Texans b/c all defenders were killed) and San Jacinto (victory for Texans b/c they captured Santa Anna)
-Texas gained independence but Mexico did not recognize independence
-Jackson, Van Buren, and John Tyler all wanted to annex (add) Texas to the U.S. but did not end up doing so (whether b/c of their decisions or b/c of the Senate) due to fears of going to war w/ Mexico
-Texas stayed independent for a while
-Oregon had both British and American settlers
-Competing claims
-British claimed land because they had established a profitable fur trade there and had been settled for much longer
-America had been settling missionaries and farmers in far greater numbers than the British
-James K. Polk wanted to add Texas + Oregon + California to the U.S. and had ran his election platform on the annexation of these territories
-Since he won the presidency, he believed that it was the American people's will to add these territories to the U.S. and that it was his job to fulfill their desire
-Predecessor John Tyler (in last months of presidency) annexed Texas
-Mexican government not happy about the annexation and went to war with the U.S.
-Polk worked out a treaty w/ Britain for Oregon (w/ Senate approval) and divided it at the 49th parallel

My notes:

Manifest destiny - John O'Sullivan - to posses the whole continent because it is a God given right
Why was westward expansion needed?
- Need for mineral and natural resources
○ Gold Rush in 1848 introduced a lot of migration towards the west
- Religious refuge
○ Mormons
Preemption Acts made buying large amounts of land cheap to start a homestead

Election of James K Polk - 1848
- Wanted Texas and Oregon
- Texas had been settled by Americans but it still belonged to Mexico
- Mexicans made two requirements - convert to Roman Catholicism and no slavery
- Americans payed no attention to this as slavery was how they ran plantations and farms and they wanted religious freedom
- This made Mexico shut down the border for more immigration
- A new dictator in Mexico wanted to crack down on these immigration laws, but the Americans revolted
- Mexico sends forces to shut down rebellion
○ Alamo was complete victory for Mexico
- Battle of San Jacinto - Mexican general was captured and settled Americans wanted Texas to be independent
- Ultimately annexation was denied by Senate for the moment, so it was independent for a bit

Oregon territory
- British claimed it was theirs because they had established fur trade long before Americans had been there
- Americans claimed it was theirs because there were a lot more Americans than British in the area
- Under James K Polk, Oregon was divided for Americans and British

I think we often confuse manifest destiny as an idea that Americans wanted to take land from the indigenous people as opposed to wanting spread their claims to the continent over and above other competing European powers. Consider that in the wake of warring European nations the indigenous tribes people were not seen as a sovereign or organized nations, they were not real competitors for the territory. While it is tragic that Americans did not respect them more and treat them better… their lands were going to be inhabited by more powerful nations. One could well imagine that had Europeans never set foot in the America’s that the Americas would have then been conquered by great native empires or later by asian expansion and imperialism. All of history is the story of advancing technology and the spread of those who use it.
