Suggestions for Short Story Marathons:

- Everyman’s Pocket Library (I have ‘Rome Stories’)
- Aleph Books has a collection of Short Stories: English translations of Short Stories originally written in Indian Languages.

I've had Her Body and Other Parties on my list for so long. I'm currently been reading a short story collection of WW Jacob's work (The Monkey's Paw is his most famous). Even though it's writing from the 1800s I'm still really enjoying it. There's one story involving men who stay in a haunted house as a joke that truly spooked me!

Have you read ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’? If you liked ‘Eight Bites’, you’d like this too.

Mara, I know you really didn’t want to judge ‘Marple’ but I liked your critique.

Her Body and Other Parties is so good! I think about it all the time, especially The Husband Stitch. I’m glad you liked Especially Heinous, a lot of people think it’s the worst in the collection and hard to get through but I thought it was excellent.

I’d really recommend Neil Gaiman’s short story collection Smoke and Mirrors. I don’t see people talk about his short fiction as much as his novels and I feel like he really excels at short stories.

Your review has me really excited for the Marple anthology, yay! Two of my favourite short story collections I've read recently have been When a Man Falls from the Sky by Lesley Nneka Arimah and Good Evening Mrs Craven by Mollie Panter Downes. They're very different but I could not put either of them down.

I read the Marple collection this week after getting a surprise NetGalley ARC and I also thought it was really great and just such a fun time! But apart from the Ruth Ware story our feelings about the individual stories are very different! 😅Some of your favourites were my least favourite and the other way around!

Marple is yet to be published in the UK,but I've been very nervous. I was dreading that someone would reimagine the character as a young PI kick-ass Englishwoman who just happened to have same surname. It sounds, however, that the character has been handled (on the whole) with respect. In which case...count me sold! A bunch more Miss Marple mysteries is just what I've been needing!

I've been reading the huge Folio 'English' and 'American' short story anthologies. All the heavyweights are included (Dickens; Conrad; D H Lawrence. Poe; Melville; Hemingway). I've enjoyed almost all of them; although I've just finished a Henry James short story 'The Beast in the Jungle', and God! - that was a plodder! I'm about ready for a proper novel again.

I read somewhere that Carmen Maria Machado based the Law and Order story on just the TV descriptions of the show to write that story. In the Dreamhouse is a must read.

I've also been reading a lot more short story collections this year and overall enjoying it. My favorite so far this year was a speculative collection called Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu. I'll look forward for other recs from you!

I loved Her Body And Other Parties -- Homesick by Nino Cipri is a short story collection that gives off a really similar vibe (CMM is also blurbed on it). I'm shocked it's not more popular, it's truly SO good.

I just started reading short story collections this year (much thanks to The Secret Lives of Church Ladies), but I’m so glad I started because I really enjoy them! Her Body and Other Parties is the second short story collection I’ve read and I didn’t like it as much as TSLOCL, mostly because of Especially Heinous (maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I’d actually seen SVU, but I don’t feel like that should be a prerequisite in order to understand what’s going on).

I'm very interested in the Marple book! A YA book anthology that I really liked is "His Hideous Heart," which retells the works of Edgar Allen Poe. Many of the writers in that anthology are POC or minority. It'd probably be a great book around October.

I think I love the idea of short stories more than the reality, but it also depends on whether it's a collection by one author or many, or if they're all set in the same world. I've read a handful of YA collections and found a lot of gems, but I always struggle to get through the whole thing because I can't switch out to something different and I HAVE to read them in order 🥴 So I've loved the Shadowhunter and Grisha story collections, and a couple by Robin McKinley, but anything outside of familiar fantasy is a struggle for me.
That said, I still really want to pick up Marple, Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman, and I've had my eye on The Secret Lives of Church Ladies; and I really love the idea of setting a goal of a certain number of stories a day.

What a fun video! I loved it. ♥️ I've had the Chiang and Machado collections on my TBR for a while, and this has convinced me to move them up. I've been very curious about the Marple collection because I'm planning to read her books next year, after I wrap up my Poirot series read-through. Your review has made me really excited for the collection (and reading Marple). I went ahead and preordered the UK edition because apparently the first print run will be have a special gold-foiled design on the cover board. Thanks for making and sharing this awesome video!

I love Stories of Your Life - I read it in 2017 while travelling and so my memories have faded a bit. Exhalation is still on my tbr. I think I've written elsewhere that Her Body and Other Parties was an average read for me but I'm glad you loved it.

I'm currently reading Night of the Living Rez from my Raven Reads subscription box and really enjoying it! It's supposed to be interconnected, which may be my favourite subgenre/type of short story collections :D
