iPadOS 18 vs iPadOS 26 In-Depth: FINALLY a Laptop Killer?!

Without a desktop grade Web browser it's still lacking in a big way. They need to allow chromium and other web browser engines on iPad OS. Safari is good as a basic browser but it doesn't support desktop grade browsing experience.

One thing I noticed after updating to ipadOS26, was that when using my ipad and sharing my mobile internet from my iphone, it actually gives you the option to do it automatically now when you need internet and you don’t have any other wifi available. I think that’s really good! You can tick the box “join automatically” when prompted.

Has everyone collectively forgotten that we can resize windows using stage manager in iPadOS 18 in a similar (though not identical) way to iPadOS 26??

Does this mean stage manager is redundant?

I am a hobby artist and can’t do without the iPad and Apple Pencil. With the announcement of iPadOS 26. It’s a win-win for me. Yes it is not full macOS but it’s a step in the right direction.

Nice to see the improvements that are coming to the iPad, but I can't help wondering if Apple is digging itself down a rabbit hole. Won't it start to eat into the sales of the MacBook Air, sure the screen is a little
bit bigger, and it runs full desktop apps, but now the iPad with these changes is closer the doing iMac duties, then people because of the iPad's portability people might start to switch their allegiance.
and remember the iPad can now not only scan documents it can also print them as well via AirPrint.
That's why maybe all those years ago when Steve Jobs introduced the first iPad, he introduced it as more of a consumption device, that sits between the Iphone and the iMac - Macbook,
A device that would do everyday tasks ( email, internet, games etc) and at a pinch run some light professional work (word processing, presentations, etc) but nothing more, because if it did, it would
start to cannibalise the rest of the portable MacBook sales. Still it's good to see Apple finally listening to consumers, even if it has taken them a long time to get there.

Please test how the application behaves, for example on Instagram, in landscape mode. Does it automatically become a small window or are there still two black borders on the right and left side?

I’m referring to apps like Instagram that are made for iPhone but also work on iPad. However, they don’t take advantage of the iPadOS interface. That’s my question.

Its so funny how you keep saying, just like a mac. This is ridiculous from apple, we get this little improvements so people keep buying the ipad hoping to replace their macs with it , and this was me years ago but i just had a big mac for real work and a macbook air.

In macOS 26, whenever you type your password incorrectly, your Memoji gives all kinds of gestures to signal it is not correct. This is fascinating!!!

Android is always gonna beat apple in their speakers and prices:/ like dolby atmos is used in a Samsung tab which sounds way better than an average ipad air pro or normal version like apple chooses their own speakers which is still low quality and its feels mid when i watch a movie on my ipad

Strange how they now name it "iPadOS 26". I understand that they now use the year 2026 for the naming, but it does give you the feeling like 'what happened to iPadOS 19 to 25?' 😅

Not a laptop killer. If you need a laptop actually on your lap or need to do video work or Xcode development, then a laptop/desktop is the only viable option.

So basically, apple just needs to make a mac with a touch screen with apple pencil support and all this silliness goes away. The macbook air is lighter than my 12 inch ipad pro with the magic keyboard attached. And the battery lasts longer and there are none of the ipad limitations. Seems like a simple fix.

Love the updates, finally making me feel like I got some value from the M4 11" iPad Pro. Only thing I really want is to have more than 1 uninterrupted audio stream playing simultaneously and also I don't know why the battery/time items at the top got so much bigger from iPadOS 18

I guess everyone’s definition of pro apps is different. My friend is a Grammy winning producer that produced tracks on his iPad using beat maker. Now that Logic Pro is here Final Cut Pro, lumafusion all of these are pro level apps, some for years now. This update is going to be amazing for us that are using iPad as one of our creative tools in our tool belts

the new iPad OS is such a game changer that i'm even going to rebuild my iPad so i can have a total rethink from scratch of how i want the device to work, and how it fits in with my other devices.

Mac apps running on Ipad? No... So you can't say that in fact an Ipad has become a Mac.

Apple is the new Microsoft….all in on bloatware nobody cares about..stupid emojis, cosmetic changes, and crap no one needs. Why not make it all run faster! Optimize the OS for speed instead of bloat.

How buggy is it?

Don't get the wrong idea I new changes are definitely nice but until you get an actual terminal with root control like you would have on Mac OS it will never ever be an actual laptop replacement because it still has too many limitations

New iPad OS is amazing on the iPad. It definitely has a lot of things I wanted as well.

P.S - If you don’t have an iPad and planning to get one to replace a laptop, just don’t. It’s a tablet, I guess people expect way too many things from a company and from a device.
