If I understood the original information from Tesla correctly, the issue with the "unstable" power and required buffering using batteries was not caused by the grid or power generation, it was caused by the GPU's, and causing issues in the grid. When training large LLM's, there is a fundamental requirement to run all GPU's in sync. The different raining steps use different amount of electricity. Not a problem for 10 or 100 GPU's, but when 100.000 GPU's fluctuate in exactly the same way at exactly the same time, the grid can't handle the fast changes in power draw. The fear about hacked IoT devices has the same reason, if someone gets access to the controls of 10% of all airconditioning machines in a country, and starts cycling them on and off exactly synchronized, the grid won't be able to handle the fast changes. The total power draw of the 10% of AC's is not an issue, the fast fluctuations in power draw are the problem, even if just a couple % of the total load.

For each data centre a high voltage input is required to limit the current thus size of conductors etc, also a massive backup generation supply is also required to prevent drop out. In turn these generators generally provide 400v or 660v so then need step up transformers to act like the grid supply. They will then require ups battery systems also to prevent critical control loss in power switch over if the grid shuts off. On top of all of this they need the most advanced cooling systems known to man, Air conditioning on steroids! This is the crux of it all keeping it cool and keeping it running!!

I think it would make sense to suck up during night times all the excess energy of the grid and run the data center during the Day with it. It would require an enormous amount of batteries but these will be necessary longterm either way to handle renewables. Of course also combine the system with huge solar farms.
