The man was staring at the child barreling towards him, this vision-lock caused his sense of direction to sway into the middle of the crosswalk, he then puts his foot forwards to protect himself, not trip the kid. The kid his reckless and aimed his skateboard at the man, this caused the man to look like he's intentionally moving into the kid because his head has to be pointed at the kid causing his legs tol sway outwards. If you stare at someone, you will generally move in their direction, if a car was speeding towards you, you'd probably accidentally run into it's path slightly if you head was turned backwards looking at it.

It could be argued that it looked like the man was just leaving in the direction he had to go while being wary of the kid, and when the kid accidentally went toward him, while still walking, the man made an effort to defend himself by blocking🦵 with his leg.
