Gundam Reconguista In G | The Gundam Retrospective

Oh boy G-Reco, a series so flawed that not even Super Robot Wars can fix it, granted X was probably not the game to try that considering it's an Isekai plot but still. At least X tried to keep most of G-Reco's BS to a minimum. But it was still confusing as, first I thought the Capital Army were the bad guys, then Towasanga then the G-IT Corps it was just a mess. Not exactly helped that they just decided to make Char the commander of Towasanga and helping them conquer Al Warth as a dry run for Reconguista out of some sense of guilt over his actions basically damning the Spacenoids to be enslaved to Earth and forced to live near Venus. Speaking of Char, Mask is just one of the dumbest Char clones I've encountered so far. As far as I could tell he was just using his Kuntela status as an excuse to just to be a crazy asshole since there really didn't seem to be any discrimination against Kuntela. His rants on Beleiri becoming a dictator really just came across as him projecting and again, rambling like a complete nutbar. Oh and the G-Self just kind of reminds me of Bumblebee from Transformers, the kid brother of Gundams. Long and short I should just avoid G-Reco and Victory Gundam like the plague.

This show is a masterpiece and I'm tired of pretending it's not.

I'm 95% certain that the reason why the G-lucifer has the moonlight butterfly is the same reason the G-self can do all kinds of inexplicable BS throughout the series. The Rose of Hermes they talk about and never, ever explain is in fact the pilot manual from the Turn A Gundam, and all the super dangerous technology that's driving the plot is derived from it.

When the manual for the G-self appears on screen it looks identical to the Turn A's Manual, except that it is a paper book instead of a tablet. Tomino has confirmed in an interview that this story is intended to take place after Turn A Gundam.

The MS battle scenes are drawn beautifully. One of the better ones, imo

G-Reco is a series that I really wish was better. I love the MS designs, and I'm very intrigued by the possible connections to Turn A, as well as the rest of the Gundam franchise. Unfortunately, none of those connections really go anywhere, and cool fights can only get you so far.

That said, I'm very excited for Build Fighters Try next. I'm not sure how it'll be received, considering the Build Fighters video was lukewarm at best, but I do enjoy this retrospective series, even if it's being carried out by someone whose opinions on the Build series differ slightly from mine.

Reconguista In G was the first Gundam show that I watched and considering it was a anniversary celebration show, I was hyped to see something really good... And I did get it on the technical aspect! The anime is just beautiful, brimming with personality (and some really weird traits that make it unique) and takes place mostly in Brasil (é nois carai), which I loved. But, the story was offensively hard to understand.

The dialogue seems disjointed at many times, character's actions being totally random at some points (like Noredo almost killing Bel's sister with a military slingshot because part of her body was exposed... When falling from a collapsing building!) The emotional tone of some many scenes being totally random too. It's like it tried to be a anti-war performatic spectacle, but forgot that it needs a proper story to do so.

I don't care about the "status quo" being maintained because no one really was being hurt by it, people were mostly chill, their lives were quite comfortable, people miraculously managed to get a balance on the advancing so they don't nuke themselves into oblivion again and the only ones that actually wanted to change things were warmongering hienas that just wanted to turn Earth into a barren hellscape one more time... And got what they deserved in the end. Oh and that Venus captain was one of the most bizarre to me, because it is a dude with zero motivation, zero explanations, zero charisma, dies by the most stupid way possible and that seemingly passed his ** on all of his crew, considering how all of them speak of him as if he was their lover (and one of them even was pregnant of him WTF)!

Honestly, Reconguista In G seems like a bunch of autistic and stubborn people being autistic and stubborn with each other until the conflict ends in the most weird way possible, as if it has never happened.

I must be one of the few people who actually likes Reco in G. Partly because it reminds me so much of King Gainer. And much like that show, the story feels like it was written to be twice the length of the show. It's sad that this Gundam is such a mess, the visuals are stellar and it has this strange "heart" to it. Like it feels like the ending, "G no Senkou", was written before the show was made and Tomino just wrote an entire world around it. there's this weird whimsy to everything and while much of it is really convenient and the good guys always win there's this almost "life" like feel of "dealing with challenges as it comes to you".
It's just a very weird show, as if it was meant to be Tomino's "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" but fell completely short of being it.

Wow if we found out that at one point in time humans were actually forced into normalized cannibalism and our entire society had to at one point subside on human flesh therefore possibly making several of our ancestors at that time cannibals I think a lot of society would completely break down at that revelation. I did not expect to see something like that in Gundam.

I genuinely believe G-Reco is a straightforward story once you realize none of the armies aren’t really the focal point of the show. The message of the show is to see things for yourself. After realizing none of the armies really care about each other’s causes and only want what’s good for them, Aida decides to lead the megafauna to travel to Towasanga and Venus Globe to find out the truths of the world. By the end of the show the warmongers are gone and the Megafauna is a ship that recruited people from every major part of the Regild Century. Tomino’s recurring theme of understanding is at it’s best in this show and it’s why it’s my favorite show of his.

The various armies are full of morons waging pointless wars that lead to nothing with dangerous weapons they barely know the full extent of. They are a part of G-reco because they show the contrast between 4 divided factions vs 1 united faction (the Megafauna).

To make the show as simple as possible, Reconguista in G is about space hippies going on a road trip around the world in an effort to understand it, picking up various people from different cultures as they travel.

Whelp, this is the most sense I've gotten out of RiG since it came out. Thanks for the hard work! 😅

For me Reoconguista in G is a mixed bag(the series anyway) the production values and music are top notch and the story elements presented are legit interesting but its pacing is it's biggest flaw, I think this was a series meant to be a full series rather than 26 episodes because it seams Tomino was given a short time frame to get all of the story threads out. Its simular to gundam F91 for me, I really like what it brings to the table but just didn't have the time and space it needed of what it could have been. That being said the mobile suit designs are really great, the g self in particular is a really great unique take on a gundam, I would love to see that one get a master grade.

To be perfectly honest though, what I'm waiting for more is for you to talk about THAT sequence in Hathaway's Flash.

I always felt like an outlier because I love G-Reco and hate IBO. I feel like the episode structure for IBO is bad, but I understand that G-Reco races like a cheetah.

when i watched this series for a few episodes back when it released, it struck me as super weird and all over the place. frankly, its a big flop in my opinion

Fun fact: the old guy in the sun hat at the end of the series is actually anime Tomino. Found that out in an SRW video then had it confirmed in the wiki

didnt like i all that much when compared to other Gundam Series, but it has my favorite art styles in all of Gundam, maybe a rewatch will change my mind

I need some help. I over the years have enjoyed the Gundam franchise very much but the one I like the most is Gundam 00. I buy the full series like I did with black Lagoon and other Anime piller Programs but I am finding a big Issue. Trying the DVD's or Blue ray is not an easy task when you wish to get all the programs in the right order. I have no need to spend more then is needed. I just need some help to get the right items for what I can spend.

I watched G reco before watching this reivew as I've been finishing Gundam shows I havent yet watched. For context I started 10ish years ago in Highschool. This show has a lot of cool ideas but is so frustrating to. Bellri comes off really high and mighty at times when he comes to terms with killing people but then will just let so many people die before doing something. The Manny/Luin fight against Bellri almost felt meta with both asking Bellri for once not have something go his way. I really wished the characters were fleshed out and given more time to care. Not an awful show but man disappointing. I feel like Victory was the hardest for me to finish along with Seed Destiny lol

Need more Gundam series like Hathaway. The story, animation, and feel was so damn good!
Not a fan of these bubbly suit designs. Gundam wing/ uc gundam/ seed/ gundam x and Hathaway have such better suit designs

While watching this series me and my friends used to make a joke like "They used to eat us" cuz of oddly how infrequent that is brought up.

I got to point this out, As you really didn't go over it. This Gundam is more then hard to follow. As look at the dam mobile suits. Who the hell is piloting what. their is like 80,000 designs each with different paint schemes and no actual identification. I couldn't tell who was the good guys or the bad guys. Its just a bunch of visual noise.

G-Reco was probably the hardest Gundam for me to sit through, and I watched thr 5 movie version! The animation, mech designs, and soundtrack were fantastic but everything else was a complete trainwreck to me.

Do they make no mention of the Jupiter Energy fleet in this show? What happened to them after the end of the U.C.? Ik the Jupiter Empire was defeated in Crossbone, but I could see them being set up again as the “space invaders.” As well

Finally, I understand this series.

Once we got into the 2nd half of the series, I was lost at the end of each episode. In fact, most of the other watchers were also and said so in the comments. Luckily, we had some people who were able to translate what was said into something we could all understand. If an author wants to convey a message to the audience, they need to make sure people can understand what is being said/ conveyed. Which sadly, he failed terribly. Worsed Gundam series IMO.
