Oh my gosh! New neighbours for Blue's worms!! I look in every 2-3 weeks. My inground garden worm buckets get attention every 4-6 weeks. Ann, would you do us all a favour and check in on Blue when there is a feeding frenzy going on in a week or so??!

i got a few stubby worms in an order one time. haven't really seen 'em since. i guess they're still in that one bin. ... i use to check on them every morning lol but now i just check moisture once a week when i go to harvest each of six bins in rotation. i have three barrels cut in half so six 27ish gallon bins. totes and buckets didn't work in the past . these half barrels are working well for about two years now . population has increased, so i guess that's a good sign over all :)

I’ve got a few stubby worms here and there too. 🤷‍♂️. I wonder if they breed??

I've said it before & chances are that I'll say it again in the future... it's always so satisfying to watch check-ins in 'Blue'! :) Great footage with the close-up lens attachment 👍🏻

My bins are very small and I only have two because I live in an apartment. They live in my livingroom most of the year except for the warmest time of the year. Then I put them out under a tree where it is cooland breezy.

I forgot to say how often I check on them. I usally feed about every two weeks. I rotate them, one each week, then the other the next week.

Oooh, if your sponge is made of cellulose, the worms will eat it. I feed them my cellulose Swedish dishcloths when they’ve reached their last bit of usefulness.

I've got a 12ft long continuous flow bin. I could make a dead body disappear lol. When you get over a certain volume you have less rules to follow. Mostly just don't create conditions favorable for black soldier fly lol.

Not take off per say, but only water until desired.

I was just noticing the startling size disparity between the Euros in my mixed (with red wigglers) bins and the single species bins. All my bins receive almost identical food and bedding, so it's not that. I'm assuming they stay small when they have to compete with the red wigglers for food.

Now that's a lot of worms!!! You have a wonderful system going there for sure.
The cft bin gets fed about every 3 weeks or so, decent sized feedings plus compost and pre composted leaves as bedding.
The 50 gal row bag bins, not as many worms as the cft, so they get less food but more frequent feedings.
Actually, with all the other stuff going on, the worms are kind off on auto pilot again.
Nice video! Stay Well!!!!

😂🤣😂I looked at my worms way too much at the beginning!! Now I peak on at least one bin a day. Loved the microscopic video inlay and the unboxing of worms!! I was recently asked a question about adding used soil straight to a worm bin so I'm exciting you're showing us here!! Is this the first time you've done a huge refresh of the garden soil this way? Excellent video Ann!!🪱🪱🪱 P.S. I tried the link for the phone microscope and the link was broken.

I’m so pleased they sent you more worms, really deserved.
Hopefully they are happy in there.

Yea my bins are a lot smaller coz I don’t have the space but they stack, like a drawer unit and I have a large tower unit too. That one the trays hold atleast 3gals of bedding each and have 3 trays.

Not sure on how many worms I have now tbh as have had 3-4000 new babies and more that have just hatched and can’t count at all yet.
Hoping that be me at 7000 ish but not enough for our food waste yet. Mine personally yes, but I want to do as much as I can for the family, so gonna keep going breeding them up and when they a good size I put them into the tower or an under the bet box I’m doing as a wedge idea. I plan on have a few more trays to the farm if I need too, got height for 5 if I want it, that’s with all trays working as I find they do go between all 3, haven’t managed to keep them in or out of a tray lol
And I plan on having 3 of the wedge type beds, I’m not sure how much they hold but I think 5gals easily. At the end I’m hoping for about 20000 worms maybe more.
But that’s where I’m going, slowly but surly. As I only started 18months s as go and only started growing them up in numbers the 6months but had a few setbacks personally so the worms had to wing it so they not as advanced as I would have wanted, think about 2months behind, but that’s behind me, not competing with others, and I’m breeder them up with one 600 breeder bin. Haven’t added more as they have matured due to my issues and don’t wanna push myself more then I can, but can’t buy more due to the cost, or I’d just buy an extra 5000 to keep me ahead. But money is the key and I have the time.

Castings should really help jump start the biology of the garden bed. I cycle the soil in my grow bags through my outdoor compost bins to rejuvenate it. I would figure you are correct that you are at or quickly approaching the worm capacity of BLUE. 😁🪱

I just barely got my own 55 gallon barrel together and most of my bins transferred over into that. One of the bins I dumped into there had a fair few ANCs in there, and they've been on their best behavior in there surprisingly. They already chewed up the packing paper covering I gave them less than 2 weeks ago. I would have never guessed that they could go into anything without a top... They're just so persnickety! Tempted to tip some more ANCs into the barrel since they're such great workers and very prolific, but I just know that the moment I get comfortable with them is the moment they will be throwing themselves onto the floor dying everywhere. 😆💀

I just discovered that foil bubble insulation this winter. It kept worms alive and thriving when I shipped a batch of reds during early spring when the temps were in the upper 30’s at night and mid 40’s during the day. The even spent five days stuck at a post office sorting facility! They should have arrived in 3 days but ended up taking 8 days! If not for the bubble wrap insulation I don’t think they would have survived.
I’d rather get a higher number of smaller worms than fewer larger ones. I still don’t understand why so many sellers work so hard to get their worms, even reds, as big as they do when selling them by the pound. Fishing worms are different, but not worms meant for composting. I try to ship mostly mature worms, but don’t worry too much about getting them giant sized.
Thanks for sharing! You have inspired me to make my own “big blue” when I move things around again come this fall when things slow down a bit. Even have my 55 gallon drum waiting for us to get space cleared out. Would love to have one bin with 20+ lbs of worms! My biggest has 9.5lbs, it makes so many castings but is now maxed out so very few cocoons and babies.
You rock and wiggle!

I’ve decided to start my own worm farm for the castings.. decided to start with like 12 worms, before I decide to order larger amounts .. if I can keep the 12 alive and good.. I’ll get more … but my thought is this- Could the stubby worms possibly be caused by mass interbreeding between the worms .. much like other animals
