Alison Krauss & Benny Martin — "Another World Ago" — Audio

Great song. Benny was not that well known out of the South. I grew up in TX and only heard his work when I took up fiddle. Not outstanding player. But one Hell of a showman and innovator. Invented an 8 string fiddle and wrote great songs like this. And brought millions of smiles to all who knew or saw him.

Anyone who's listened to and studied his playing in the 1950s, especially on the surviving radio airchecks with Flatt & Scruggs, will say this is a major understatement!!! Benny was an AMAZING fiddler: great pitch, formidable timing and inventive and interesting harmonical choices.
Of course he was NOT a western swing fiddler, so he should not be compared to, say, Johnny Gimble. But in his field, he was about the best there was, when he was at his peak.

Benny Martin did write this song. He was a wonderful songwriter, singer, and a knockout performer. He is regarded as one of the best bluegrass fiddlers ever. Benny is on guitar on this cut and the fiddles are played by his friend Buddy Spicher, Dobro is Jerry Douglas. We recorded this for OMS Records in about 1998.

Beautiful song, put together with some very talented people! Thanks also for the information about this recording, I wonder why this recording didn't get more attention, guess timing just wasn't right. Certainly deserves to be a classic, but maybe the world wasn't ready for this poignant Ballard.
