So basically the setup duplicates existing gears rather than using a dividing head or indexing head? I have never cut a gear but I think I will have need of it soon and I only have a metal lathe...

sound cut out early, and then would be a good time to add commentary on how to calculate the pitch, what options there are to hold the workpiece and tips to ensure smooth meshing, what used for the cuts, etc. basically everything really lol

Ok it's a poor man's dividing head but how did you fabricate the index gear (or index plate) without the jig to begin with? Did you just use one of your change gears that had the right ratio?

How in the world to you do the math to figure out that the last pass you make through the gear will be perfectly in the right place not to be to close or to far away from the very first pass you cut through the gear?

That's not how to cut gears, that's how to copy them ?

I have a very similar setup on my mini lathe except I'm using a dividing head with dividing plates mounted on the vertical (y axis) plate.
