Hives will not swarm with a virgin queen. The queen will leave before the next queen emerges. That is the original queen. But that swarm retrieve went alot better than my first. But then my first was 25 feet off the ground.
ОтветитьI've been watching you since the beginning and next study year (september) I'm planning on starting my first beehive! I'm just a bit overwhelmed with the choices of hives (also they are expensive and I want to buy a good one once instead of buying a shitty one having to replacing it later).. I found an imker who is willing to help me out a bit but that's still a few months and a country(!) away :P Any tips for what hives to look out for? New or used? Wood or plastic?
Durability and bee-comfort are high on the priority list!
Thnx for making your videos so we can learn from your profits and mistakes!
What's with the Star Trek Photon Torpedo in the bee yard???
ОтветитьSpray first with sugar water to make them sticky. Less flying bees. The big question is why did you let a hive of yours get overcrowded? You were close to loosing a years worth of hard work.
Why didn’t you just move them as soon as hived them. The bees can overheat and die in a closed hive.
I could be wrong but from what I have read (yes newbie) the old queen is the one that goes with the swarm and the remaining bees rear the new virgin queen. Please anyone please correct if I am wrong in my statement.
Either way great job with your vids! I've loved watching all of them.
Hilarious I caught my first swarm 6 weeks or so ago after watching a guy catch his and had the same question.... I have them all in a box, now what????
ОтветитьGrabbing a swarm I would wear gloves not knowing their attitude. Good job. I try to not dump any syrup near the hives to keep ants away.
Ответитьgreat fun isn't it?
I caught 4 this year like that
Awesome
ОтветитьNo gloves! O_O You're so brave!
ОтветитьCongratulations on catching the swarm. Hopefully I can get to my hive this weekend and do some major checkerboarding
ОтветитьNice video. It's always exciting catching swarms, I caught 6 swarms in March. Out of the 6, I have 2 hives that have mated queens and didn't abscond.
My only recommendations are; 1. to make sure they have enough space as that was a big swarm and 2. don't disturb them for at least 10 days as that's about how long it takes the queen to mate and start laying.
I just caught my first swarm and it wasn't from my hives yeah!!! Tried to get them in a 5 frame nuc wouldn't fit had to get a full 10 frame deep
ОтветитьWhy would you’re own bees swarm out of your own hives? I’m new to all this and would like to get educated on all this so one day I can have my own honey bee colonies
ОтветитьThat's a need deal.. Most of the swarms I have dealt with have had mated queens with them.. I have seen virgins with the swarm but they are usually killed once laying starts. I have not had a virgin only swarm before... cool!!
ОтветитьNext time spray the bees first. Syrup in a sprayer. Wet bees no fly so good. You got lucky. It's ALWAYS heavier than you think and sometimes you'll drop the box. Another tool you need to keep around is a cheap plastic flower pot on a pole. Eventually you'll have one wayyy up there like 30 feet. That's what the fishing pole is for. Cast line up to the right branch with lots of weight. A spark plug...
Use the fishing line to get the rope over the limb then shake. Break the limb off if you can or they keep regathering on it.
It's best to move a swarm 3+miles. They'll stay put every time if you move them. They may have already found a place. That's why u move them. Disorient them.
Do u coat ur plastic frames with wax
ОтветитьOne of my hives swarmed to a trailer just a few feet away from the hive. Them queens can't fly very far
ОтветитьSo much fun! I caught my first 3 swarms this year on Vancouver Island, Canada. Up until then i had never even seen a swarm. Videos on my channel.
ОтветитьDid u feed the swarm that u catch ?
ОтветитьDo you ever get stung
ОтветитьHow often do you get stung on your hands?
ОтветитьCool video what is the insulation board under the hives for. Thanks
ОтветитьYou could set out swarm catchers with lemon grass essential oil in a plastic thingy that can emit the smell
ОтветитьNo stinging on arm?
ОтветитьI always think are you squashing thebees whe. You put the frames in?
ОтветитьBeing can be more then 1 Queen in a swarm suggest shark on sheet next to a Box with brood in it and look for balls of bee's. Just suggestion
Ответитьspectacular !
ОтветитьPORCUPINE!
ОтветитьAnd he didn't use gloves! I love BEES!🐝
ОтветитьJust witnessed my first swarm. It took me three attempts before capturing. I literally chased them down the block. What an amazing sight as they swarmed. So cool. Thanks for all the videos. 8-)
ОтветитьI thought the older queen, was the one who swarms off???
ОтветитьToday is June 22nd 2020. Went outside and heard the roar of my bees, took a look and sure enough they were swarming in a tree just above my oregano patch, appears to be a simple catch, pretty cool when they swarm to an area they are easily caught. Enjoy your videos. Had a couple swarms in May, have no idea where they ended up, all I could do is watch them head down the road and think to myself, go repopulate.
ОтветитьNo gloves... WHY??!
ОтветитьSo so helpful!!!!!!!
ОтветитьHow far from the tree they swarmed in did you put the hive? I ask because I want to bait a swarm in a tree in my yard and move them 30 yards to my roof.
ОтветитьWhere was your gloves. Lucky no stings
ОтветитьWithout smoke or gloves?
ОтветитьStay safe
ОтветитьSorry if am catching this late, well you were suppose to bring a beehive with two frames, one honey and the second open brood and then shake the clustered swarm into the box, by doing so, you 'ain't gonna have any issues at all my friend .
ОтветитьGreat job catching the swarm! I hope to catch one some day!
ОтветитьOMG that was awesome! Interesting that they don't move at all when they are clustered together in a ball...like they are asleep or mesmerized.
ОтветитьIt's almost two years later watching this and I'm so excited for you!. LOL
ОтветитьI've enjoyed watching your bee journey. I'm excited to see what happens with your new hive design.
ОтветитьI'm really curious if you got stung at all. My first swarm I got stung more than five times less then ten and ten minutes later I was in an ambulance. I'll wear gloves next time.
ОтветитьI got a swarm from my neighbors electric box.... I have them in a hive but not sure what to do next, will they stay if I open the box?
ОтветитьI just caught my first swarm in a old hive box i put in a tree. I'm guessing all I need to do is resituate it and place a feeder in it. Pretty exciting.
