According to his latest biography, Charles Lee had bipolar disorder inherited from his mom's side of the family, which would explain his behavior.
Despite that, he was brilliant in a military and scholarly sense. He was beloved and admired earlier on in the war. He helped out greatly in preparing the defenses of NYC before being temporarily transferred to Charleston, S.C., where he achieved his zenith of the war. There's a fort named after him right in New Jersey; used to be called Fort Constitution. Up until the aftermath of the New York campaign, Lee and Washington were pretty close.
The British troops who caught him ironically used to be under his command. They were currently led by Banastre Tarleton, the man who would be held responsible behind the "Waxhaws Massacre" in 1780.

Lee lacked the character to win. No soldier will respect an arrogant ass who does not care for them.

The gentleman narrating this series seems to really be into it.
Using an intellectual edge he acts as if he's imparting a tremendous service to his viewers. They picked the right guy on this one.
I'm sure he's drooling and chomping at the bit to covering their slavery series.

I HAVE LOVED THIS SERIES FOR DECADES AND AM AT AWE AT WHAT IT TOOK TO BREAK AWAY FROM BRITAIN. THIS ACT HAS SHOWN OUR PLANET OF A TRUE CAUSE. TWO THINGS BOTHER ME NOW, WHAT AMERICA HAS BECOME POLITICALLY WITH CORRUPTION AND GREED IN ONE PARTY WHILE THE DEMS ARE TRYING TO UNITE IT AFTER 5 YEARS OF HELL. THE OTHER IS THE QUALITY OF VIDEO. AT 240P IT REALLY SUCKS AND SHOULD BE DIGITIZED FOR QUALITY. IF POSSIBLE DO SO!!

"when asked why for so many years this nation has prospered like no other nation in history, it is because here we unleashed the power of the individual like no other place on earth. we should not underestimate the power of free men and women, it is a weapon that our enemies do not have. it is a weapon WE DO HAVE! at times the cost of that freedom has been high but, we have never been unwilling to pay that price! when people say we live in a time without heros, well those people just dont know where to look. the sloping grounds of arlington cemetery with its row upon row of crosses and stars of david make up but a small fraction of the cost of our freedom. these men lost their lives at places like belle wood, normandy, bastogne, flanders, and across the oceans in places like guadlcanal, tarawa, iwo jima and in a thousand rice patties in a place called veitnam. to the enemies of the united states and those who would practice terrorism understand this, peace is the highest asperation of the american people. we will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it,BUT WE WILL NEVER SURRENDER FOR IT NOW OR EVER!

Lee should have been given a court martial for dereliction of duty. Should have let the British keep him.

Something I learned recently, after the battle, the highest ranking Hessian officer available offered his sword to General Washington. However Washington refused the sword, stating mercenaries have no honor.
