The thing is, it is actually 2 different words for the same thing... So you could correct him when he says "hi" or "hey" with "hello" and it be just as correct

I believe it was "Lost In the Pond" that pointed out that the pronunciations were originally reversed. At some point, the British took on the American pronunciation at about the same time the American's took on the British pronunciation.
