Technically speaking, it looks more like a really good high school match than a D-1 national final. Interesting to see how wrestling has evolved so much over the past 50+ years.

This was bigger than just wrestling. Here are four 2other losses for the undefeated in the last match.
5. 2005 USC Trojan football: With 34 straight victories over three years, USC was trying to become the first team to win three consecutive National Championships. With five minutes to go, a 38-26 is not enough as they lose to Texas 41-38.
4. 2007 New England Patriots: In the only sport where going a whole season undefeated is even possible, though rare (once in eighty years), New England was dominant entering the Super Bowl. They led 14-10 with just 42 seconds to go, but lost to the NY Giants 17-14.
3. 1972 USA Olympic Men's Basketball team: In the Olympics, they had never lost a game while winning every gold medal game(7), and 63 consecutive games over 36 years. In a controversial game, with the last three seconds played THREE times, the USSR scored as time expired to win 51-50.
2. 1985 Larry Holmes: In his boxing career, Holmes had won 48 straight fights, including 20 title defenses, while never tasting defeat. He was one win shy of tying the mythical record of 49-0 set by Rocky Marciano. In his 49th fight against the smaller Micheal Spinks, Holmes would let true immortality slip away by losing a unanimous decision.
Now back to wrestling,
1. 2000 Aleksandr Karelin: Considered by many, the greatest Greco-Roman wrestler of all time, Karelin was entering his last match of his career, obviously for the gold in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Not only was he undefeated in Olympic competition, or he had never lost a match internationally, he was unsecured upon for the last six years! There's a rumor he lost one match inside of Russia. This final victory slipped from his grasp and he was defeated in overtime 1-0 by Rulon Gardner from USA.
Just a little smattering of sports history. Your Welcome!

the comments saying gable isnt good from their computer do not impress anyone. Gable won the olympics and that transcends time. Modern day bias goes too far. No doubt in my mind gable would of won at least 1 title in modern day and a contender for any weight in freestyle.

Coach Gable has always been someone I looked up to as an Iowa prep wrestler in the 80's. This is the first time I have seen this match, but there is one thing about Dan Gable that is always a common denominator-perseverance. Reading his first book right now, he engrained the Iowa Stile in me before I even know knew what it was. THANK YOU COACH GABLE!!! West Sioux Community 1984-1987, and yes Tom & Terry both beat on me in those years. I never gave up and started several wrestling clubs in small towns that never had wrestling on a small 12X12 mat in my basement. Several of those kids went on to place in the state tourney and even in D3 college. I admire your courage and determination, because that is what it takes.

Gable wrestled a terrible match. Owens is taller, bigger, stronger, and in better shape. Owens won this match before it even started. Gable looked like he was holding on for dear life. Owens was way quicker, more explosive, more decisive and deserved to win.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Gable when he was coaching the US team and getting ready to meet the Russian team in Chicago. A buddy of mine and I were in town for a convention and were bar crawling around Rush street. We went in a sports bar to empty ourselves of all the beer we had consumed so we were standing at a urinal when this guy came into the rest room and stripped off his shirt. He was really built but not too tall. Then another came in and did the same only he's bigger. My buddy and I looked at each other and simultaneously decided it was time to get the hell out of there! It turns out the US team and Gable were being interviewed on tv and the wrestlers were changing into a better colored t shirts for tv viewing. Whew, we weren't sure what we were getting into! After the the tv spot, we got a chance to meet Dan. Really nice guy and very low key....but we were worried for awhile...Haha

Maybe often missed but with only 3 seconds remaining and up 13-11, Owings shot on Gable thus never taking his foot off the gas pedal. He was not going to give Gable a chance for something crazy.

What I loved most about this epic match from long ago is you could feel Owings incredible determination to win this match and on the other side, Dan Gable fighting all the way from a deficit showing a champion’s heart despite falling short.

These young men stood atop the shoulders of giants whom preceded them such as Bill Koll, Doug Blubough, Habibi of Iran, Medved of the USSR, etc…Just as today’s champions stand atop the shoulders of Gable, Owings, and so many others thereafter.

Life is all about progress and evolution but we should never forgot the contributions of those who paved the way for us. 🙏

You guys comparing this to a high school match today have to understand something.
It’s all about being the best in the particular time frame you were in competing in. Just like the ole saying, a fish will only grow as big as the tank it’s in.
If Gable would have been born in 2005 or whatever he would dominate just as much today as he did then. Conversely, if Sanderson or Messenbrink or whoever else was born in the 40s, their physique and performance wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is today.
One last thing, 30-40 years from now everybody will be dogging the 2020s wrestlers and you guys will be telling the young guys what I’m telling you now!🤣
