Get a squire and a small practice amp(i got my first guitar and amp for about 180 euros), and when you can play properly get some pedals and a bigger amp. >Wanting to imitate Nirvana >Not imitating god-tier Alice in Chains Do you even grunge bro?

I wouldn't recomend a squire to anyone. I owned one from the early 90's and they were great, but sinds the turn of the century Fender changed something in production and now they pretty much suck. So if you realy want a squire you're better of on the second hand market, buying a 90's one. There are a ton of other brands that make strat copies for the same price that are excellent guitars for the price range.

Depends on what you like to play, and how loud. Fender Blues Jr. is great, and takes pedals, but isn't exactly budget. The Orange Micro terror is awesome too, but requires a cabinet. Kustom has some decent budget stuff as does Blackstar. I'd stay far away from modeling amps and get a good nuts and bolts true guitar amp.

Thanks for the advice mate, looked at the Blues Jr. amp and I think that's the one i'm gonna invest in. Appreciate it :)

I have a Fender Sratocaster, but it was made in a custom Fender shop. Is it possible that my Strat does have humbucker pickups, because they're square, and certainly don't look like single coils. EMG btw

Marty's Strat was made during the great whammy bar depression of the 80s.

Thanks for the info,  I am using dean razorbacks with stock pickups, I was wondering if there were any pedals that could be used to change those heavy metal sounds in to a heavy blues sounds.  I know they won't be as bright, but something like dirty Texas blues.  ZZ toppish or like Pride and Glory-Zakk wylde.  If that made any sense.  Thanks

My two cents.

Don't you just love it when people try to describe sounds in words instead of playing them for us to hear? If you like this way of doing things why not try my radio art program - we're describing some great Piccasso's this week...

Actually you dropped every name currently in my cars cd player accept for Gershwin and Andy Timmons . Anyway just wanted to drop you a message and say Thank you for the inspiration and tips. I would like to request a video from you as well on how to " properly" set up a electric guitar as far as intonation and action wanting to get into bottle necking. Thanks again

Hey Marty, I thought, because my friend said, that the big square pick ups are single coils and those white thin ones with the holes in them are humbucker pick ups, are you sure that you're right?

Hey Marty I'm listening to you explain your "Blues Theory" to beginners and I dig the sound of your voice it's kinda whiny and humble, please don't take this in a bad way I just find it cool, and relaxed, it's not criticism, it's a compliment, in a funny kinda way. Take care. Mike.

I really need a pedal that does distortion. I need it for a harder sound that I can flip on and off for the chorus of a song or the solo. For ex. In the song "say it ain't so" I need a cleaner tone during the verse but I need distortion to kick in during the chorus. Can anyone tell me a good pedal that is less then 65 dollars and has a good sound.

The reason i dont use a Strat for blues is because so many others have already used one and probably gotten much more out of it than me......i want/NEED to create something new..........not just a carbo copy of past albeit greats.........thats a good reason too.....I mainly use a Tele but also an epiphone wildkat (very cool smaller body hollow guitar)...as you say though play with your soul or......well.......go home!

Hi marty. I've been playing guitar for almost 10 years on my own. a few days ago a couple of blocks away from my job, I found amusic school with an amazing instructor/owner and decided to enroll asap and take some courses just to enhance my playing a bit more. I got myself a used epiphone special 2. the owner has 2 Ibanez signature ones and that epiphone was a gift he does not need. Got it for 100$. the one thing i didnt know is that it did not have a whammy bar. nevertheless i love it. Today, Im 30 years old. in the past my bands to listen to were dream theater, alterbridge and such genres. Today i still do, however what i desire to learn to play is different. I do like playing a few tracks by satriani, gary moore, maybe creed, and what i mostly will be focusing on is fusion metal and blues. I like jazz and funk however the tones i love most are by bands like journey like the song be good to yourself, or higher place, some of that petrucci tone when he plays fast. This may sound like a lot for a guy who played for 10 years but i am self taught and never had the chance to learn the right way. Now I do, but there is a certain style i wish to learn to play for my own piece of mind, and I am hoping that epiphone was not a mistake, and which pedals to get with time if my aim is to get that jouney, petrucci, or even johnson tone. from some reasearch, I think its distortion and delay or reverb. please help me out before i begin taking any courses, and just to know how to narrow it down and what proper stuff to get for that tone. thanks Love your videos. from lebanon, halfway across the world. much love to you marty

Hey man been watching for about a year now started playing and your videos are the ones I watched and I played acoustic guitar for maybe 6 months before I started looking into actu as l riffs and stuff just messed around got use to the feeling but when I got my electric I would throw your videos on and although I have yet to complete a full song I have deff learned alot from just things you have showed so thank you for the lessons! I play a fender strat as well love it! Anyone starting out it's going to take time slow down take your time and just practice it's so relaxing if you have a bad day pick it up and turn it up and just jam even if you dont know notes just play and watch how those sounds just honestly effect your mood it's amazing the power of music RESPECT to all players out there!! QUESTION!!! I am getting a new guitar soon my strat i got at a palm shop what are your thoughts about getting a brand new guitar over going pawn shop hunting and finding a decent guitar???
