Watching Chelsea early this season, this felt inevitable. Teams are now denying us space in behind and nullifying our greatest strength. It’s now about developing the ability to breaking teams down, dictating the tempo of games. This is a huge part of our down turn inform, but at the end of the day. Not taking chances and making defensive mistakes will cost any team games.

Chelsea fan here:

I fully back Maresca's tactics, it was clear to see at the start of the season how well this team can perform when it is running on all cylinders. HOWEVER, if the tactic is this reliant on 2 players who have constantly been injured since joining Chelsea it will never work. He needs to find a way to adapt to the players who are available. Its also like you pointed out the body language of every single attacking player since this poor run started, No one is making runs, no one is confident enough to take on their man, The Wingers who are meant to be out wide and stretch the defense are tucked in basically standing next to everyone else. Now that can be down to the players just not giving a shit or it could be Maresca being poor with man management.

What I liked about Maresca in the beginning was how blunt he was in interviews. Saying "no this player is not going to play cause i dont want him", " xPlayer needs to be better ". Now it feels like he is being a bit too protective of players who are so very clearly out of form (Mainly Sanchez who tbf I dont think has ever been in form).

BUT despite all the things you can point to Maresca being the blame, all the possible Solutions from his squad were ripped out during the January transfer window. Felix (Who Maresca didnt fully want) was loaned off to Milan, He should have been coming on as a Sub for Palmer when hes not performing *which he hasnt*. Nkunku (who is a Brilliant player in a system that does not suit him, Anyone who says otherwise does not know ball. He is not a ST and cannot play CAM with Palmer being there) clearly does not want to be at Chelsea anymore, the owners failed to ship him out and find a replacement to compete with Jackson who is now injured along with Guiu so now Maresca has to rely on a player who does not want to be here, playing out of position. We Still need a Solid CB who can give the backline the leadership it so desperately needs. (Not to mention Players who have clearly not been in the squad since Day 1 not being shipped out: Chillwell is on Loan, Sterling is on Loan, Nkunku shouldve been sold and replaced in January)

All of that is down to the owners who seem to only be interested in buying youth players who wont even play for the 1st team for another 2 years and even then they'll be inexperienced. All they seem interested in is making profit off of these youth signings. Thats where I lay the blame, What is Maresca a relatively inexperienced manager meant to do with a squad of Kids who dont fit the system he wants to play, and the ones that do are constantly injured. And to top it off the Depth he had has been shipped off on loan.

As a Chelsea fan, I have watched most games this season … we started the season by having movement all over the pitch and were basically a nightmare; until teams realised they just needed to hold a medium to low block (which roughly coincided with Fofana and Lavia being injured) and now if you watch a Chelsea game you will see how little movement or options off the ball we are providing to anyone who has the ball … it’s sad, disappointing, and at times embarrassing. I think everyone knew how important Jackson was (being basically the only striker) but this video shows just how important Fofana and Lavia were; which was much more subtle.
Much appreciated.

However, Maresca and the football directors have not helped by not recalling Andres Santos from their sister team Salzburg. If Cacaido gets injured it gets even worse. The Chelsea football directors and Maresca are too dogmatic and stupidly inflexible tactically.

This is spot on! 💙It only made sense to sell Conor because as you say Lavia could do the same function.
Same for Fofana, subsituting him with Coliwell is a ridicolous decision. You can clearly see that they are not on the same level. Same goes for Enzo Fernandez. He needs cover in the back as simple as that. Asking Cucu to go forward because we miss a striker is ridiculous. Sell all the rest of the 1 billion dollar bottle jobs. Look at Villa they went and got really quality and experience in the transfer window! They will finish well above us if the manager doesn´t manage to sort of this situation. As pointed out in this video a good manager would go figure it out. Pottechino did last year so why can we not go back to the tactics that worked at the end of last season?? Get these clowns out of my Club.

Having watched them lose an eminently winnable game at Villa today, I'm convinced Maresca is telling them not to attack. Palmer made lots of forward runs. Never got the ball. The times they nearly scored cam from long balls to the wings or over the top. But when they got close the recycled the ball to the back, then the keeper kicked it long and lost it. After they were losing they got a throw on near the box and had ZERO players in the penalty area. Threw it backwards and lost it. I blame the coach

Chelsea fan I think Wes and Lavia were big misses too.

Our 2-3-5 shape was devastating in the counter press and ball retention.

Nico is a brilliant man many people don’t realise he was not playing striker before Chelsea and when he was he would have someone with him he has never led a line

I agree entirely with the NJ analysis.

He reminds me of Werner in some ways where he doesn't score a ton of goals but his movement, positioning and energy is a massive boon for the team. Defence can't just him them sit in dangerous positions even if they are unlikely to punish them and so track to create space for the mid attack.

In the absence of a ruthless goal scorer having someone like NJ is a decent alternative.

I very much agree with your analysis and points of view on Chelsea's scheme and performances... their static forwards do not look for empty spaces, they wait for the ball to reach their feet... that's why I think that Caicedo, who is an excellent passer between the lines, his partner who takes advantage of these passes the most is Jockson... I don't want to imagine the disaster that would happen to Chelsea if Caicedo is absent from the starting team due to injury (I think he is the only player on the starting team who has not suffered injuries)... I subscribe to your channel

@Grerty22

The problem Maresca will have is that Lavia and Fofana missed all of last season and Poch got the team playing well. Jackson played last season without any real injuries, so you could say that's unlucky if he gets injured, but no one should realistically have been relying on Fofana or Lavia given their injury history, same as James.

I actually think Sanchez had been fine. He's won save of the month multiple times. The original issues were with his passing from the back, rather than his goalkeeping, but then fans and pundits picked up on that and led to making goalkeeping errors like against Haaland. Just let him be a goalkeeper and he's fine, makes a lot more good saves than Kepa for example.

The biggest problem is at centre back. Colwill had all this hype, but is he actually any better than Guehi or Tomori? He's not strong enough to be 1 v 1 with an attacker, and I'm yet to see the ball playing hype. He's still the best centre back there. Tosin is bigger and stronger and takes a bit more responsibility with the ball, but mentally doesn't seem switched on all the time, which can allow himself to be pressured by dordling with the ball when he didn't need to. So if Colwill could take more ownership of playing out instead of mostly passing back to Sanchez or Tosin, then maybe they would be better, but overall it's an area that needs improvement.

Full backs lack pace and physicality. Cucu was never quick and James has lost his speed now, whilst Gusto is a bit lightweight when he has to come central.

Then Chelsea might have some answers to these problems, but they're out on loan, like Veiga or Felix. To that end Maresca is maybe unlucky because he could only offer them Conference League and cups, but maybe he could have played them more in the prem after good performances. I think as well his subs, so earlier in the season he didn't make changes at 60 minutes like every other manager, so Nkunku for example, would only come on after 85 minutes in the league after scoring a hat-trick in his last game. Only really Pedro Neto was able to transition into the main xi. Can see it as giving players like Jackson and Madueke confidence by sticking with them and letting them play 80+ minutes, but then on the flip side no Nkunku doesn't really seem committed and Felix is gone.

The squad desperately needs to get at least Europa League, even in this down moment should still have drawn at Villa which wouldn't have been a bad result, so they have the potential to get back on track. Hopefully can beat Southampton and go from there.

I have the impression that Caicedo is enough of a bastard too.

The reality is that both Fofana and Lavia have spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch in their careers. So if your success depends on then you have a very big problem. And the warning signs about that were already there when Chelsea bought them.
