People who say the first rankings dont matter are flat out wrong. Sets the order and precedent for the rest of the season. Shows that Team A will be ahead of Team B if they have similar resumes

Usain bolt is a bad analogy because his competition has very little to do with his performance on the track. Its just him vs. the clock. Its not like roller derby where the other racers have to play defense, nor is there a strategy element where you slow down play to bleed the clock or a luck element with turnovers.

Gotta love how we’re talking about the treacherous road for the SEC when they bake in a glorified bye week in November by playing some elementary school. No other conference does that crap.

Josh, I believe half of these early projected teams will not be in the final 12 playoff teams. Will get very interesting as we move towards the end of the season. 😊

I think it is Alanis Morissette ironic that for years the excuse for under ranking BYU was “yeah they’re undefeated and have large margins of victory but they haven’t played anybody.” Now that BYU is in the P4, they’re being under ranked and told “yeah your strength of schedule is good and you have 2 top 25 wins, but you’re not winning by enough points.” Meanwhile, to Indiana “we know your SOS is terrible, but you have nice margins of victory. Are we just saying whatever we want to say now to justify our biases?

Look, BYU may not be a top 5 or top 10 team, and Indiana may be better, we don’t know. All we have to go off of is what they’ve achieved on the field. The problem for BYU is the goal posts keep moving.

Saying a program doesn’t have input on their SOS is such a victim mentality. Top SEC teams had Clemson, Michigan, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and USC on their schedules this year, who were all thought of as good programs in the pre-season. IU had FIU, W Illinois, and Charlotte. When you have so much garbage in your own conference, you need to schedule tougher opponents.

Notre Dame should not get in if they dont belong to a conference. They should be considered a Group of 5 team if anything

Your whole argument falls apart for SOS and quality losses when you lose to Vanderbilt. Ohio State losing to Oregon by less than a score in Autzen is a quality loss. Getting dominated by an inferior opponent isn’t.

Huh ?

Bar Rooms across the country are frowning ..... Boise State Lost to only ranked team they played or will play this year) ? Indiana (they in because previously unranked 6-3 Louisville,Now No. 22) beat Clemson ?) ... even Miami has played and beat no one of significance (beat No. 22 by 1 score)

At least BYU beat No.19 Kansas State but beat No. 88 Oklahoma state by 3 points ....more than half the SEC beat higher ranked teams.

What can we say about fandom, as well as all these pundits and their fascination with W-L Records.

A HS Varsity W-L record is 8-4
That HS Jr-Varsity W-L record is 12-0

Conclusion ... the JV team is better than Varsity

Let's look at current rankings:

Army is No. 25 w/ a 8-0 record; They haven't beaten a team ranked higher than 98... Their average opponent ranking is 120. and folks are complaining that they should be ranked higher, all their record shows is that they are better than 98. Their SoS is 130th in the country !

Miami is ranked 4, their SoS is 39th in the country .... not bad but 12 teams go to the playoffs. Let's look at their schedule: Played 9 teams with an average ranking of 74 ! Not impressed.

What can we say about Boise State... they caught a sleeping Oregon and did beat No 22. Was State as their only ranked opponent, they have the 86th most difficult schedule in the country. They have a stronger claim than the two above.

I'm absolutely on Army's side. They are a great football team this year. With Daily at the helm, they have been highly efficient. Weak SoS sure, but same as Indiana, have absolutely obliterated their opponents. With the committee putting them at 25, if they win out, I'm not convinced they would get in. Even with a ND win.

@jpDragna

Man is the committee clever in how they set up the rankings to make sure at least 4 SEC teams get in almost no matter what. SMU's got two chances of getting in, ND loses, or an SEC team gets upset. Mind, that's already happened a bunch of times this year, but the committee gave just enough "credit" to SMU to have people ignoring what they actually did.

Nothing is more telling to me about how stupidly and blindly the committee and others blindly adhere to the adage "SEC is king!" than Mizzou being in the top 25 of the committee's first rankings. It's behind insane, it's just plain idiotic. There's no way you've watched Mizzou play football this year and couldn't find 30-40 teams that have played better than them. This is why I don't give a crap about power ratings, those ultimately rely on who you think is the good team to beat. Big stats against teams perceived to be stronger "means" more than big stats against "weaker" teams. What on Alabama's schedule and resume tells you definitively they're better than SMU? And I'm not saying a pure on paper talent comparison. I'm talking about football played on the field this year.

What a stupid analogy with the track thing🤦🏻‍♂️. Usain Bolt doesn't run against a defense. When he runs, he's running against himself. Doesn't matter who is running against him. He's running to beat the competition but does that mean he slows down against high school competition and starts jogging across the finish line? No, he would run as fast as he could run. Indiana is playing against terrible teams and defenses. So you can't really tell what they would do against better teams because their schedule is so soft.

I can't believe Vanderbilt isn't ranked. They beat Alabama (and looked like the better team that day), and they gave Texas all they could handle. I don't get how a committee can actually sit down and believe that Vandy and Army are both worse than Missouri.

The SEC thinks it should be guaranteed status for its mediocre teams—if it cannot determine its Top Three why should a National Tournament for the National Champion be stuffed full of Southern teams that have worst records and worst on field performance than the teams it never competed against in order to allow rematches, or matches they avoided in order to prime the pump for more SEC teams in a National Title Tournament. I don’t need to see Alabama or Ole Miss rematches again against teams they’ve already been defeated by. Three SEC team are plenty—they’re all pretty much two-loss except Texas and Georgia Tennessee winner what two loss team is best at this point? And why do we need to see them in a National Title Tournament over a one-loss team? Notre Damw lost to NIU. Enough said—the only reason they’re ranked highly is to give status to Texas A&M.
