This was one of those songs that fell through the cracks that were a big issue in the early 1980's, mainly because of the state of radio in New York (at the time a big influencer of whether songs became hits or not) at the time. The biggest problems when this song (which peaked at #46 in the US in August 1983, more than a year after it was originally recorded) came out in the US were:
WABC (770 AM) which was the longtime kingpin of New York radio during the 1960's and '70s had become a talk station on May 10, 1982 (referred to by many as "the day the music died" on WABC).
WNBC (660 AM) had a program director Howard Stern (who was there from 1982-'85, in his 1995 autobiography "Private Parts" named "Kenny" that he called "pig vomit" and in real life) he called "pig virus" all the way to his death a few years ago. That PD was VERY conserative in nature and did not allow a lot of songs for a long while to be played on WNBC while allowing others to be played (and widely for example believed to be the ONLY reason "More Than Just The Two of Us" by a group called Sneaker hit the Top 40 nationally in the US in 1982 as it's believed airplay on WNBC drove it to be a national hit that it otherwise would not have been).
There was no true Top 40 station in New York until WHTZ (Z-100 at 100.3-FM) debuted in late August 1983 and WPLJ-FM (95.5 until 2020) completed a slow flip from Rock to Top 40 around roughly the same time.
If I got to do a continuation of "Mad Men" set in the 1990's, this would be one of the songs I would end an episode with. If it were re-released in 2022 as a single on its 40th anniversary it likely would be a much bigger hit than it was originally.

Vraiment pas ma version préférée.

ОтветитьEn souvenirs de toi mon premier AMOUR 💘 Ghislaine Argoud !
ОтветитьOne of the best albums ever! This was a favorite of mine. Heard it on the radio a couple of times. Bought the album, wore it out.
ОтветитьI heard this song as a kid and loved it. It was so tough to find this song with what little I remembered of the lyrics... had it confused with lyrics like "Please don't let this feeling end" for a while!
Ответитьyears ago when this song came out I was driving my car, before cell phones. Heard this on the radio, looked for the nearest phone booth because the DJ did not say the name of the song when over, he told me the name of it and the rest is History!! Love this tune!! Such Harmonies!! I only found 1 CD of this duo, think it was the only one they made together??
ОтветитьShould have been a bigger hit in the United States. I was a DJ when this song came out and I played it every chance I got.
ОтветитьI first heard this song when I was in middle school, and I thought she was a black singer when I heard her voice. Haha
But as time went by, it became a world where I could search like this, and when I looked for it, the voice that touched me was someone different from my imagination than I imagined. Haha
