There’s definitely generational unfairness right now. Young working age people with no assets are being taxed to send CPP and OAS to older people who own homes. Income is taxed at high levels, while principle residence appreciation is completely tax free.

The majority of houses in our cities with more than 3 bedrooms which would be suitable to raise families are now owner occupied by seniors which destroys the justification for “single family zoning”. Two 70 year olds aren’t the family that zoning was made for.

All this said, this government is a mess, it believes in unlimited growth and is a kamikaze pilot for our country. We need to oppose any proposal to increase taxes it makes. In principle, taxing income less and taxing principle residences would shift the tax burden from poor young people to rich old people which could help lift our abysmal birth rate. We are running out of future in this country. Cheers to the past.

Preface. I’m against this tax, however your attitude in discussing this topic is off-putting.

People are unable to afford to even rent a roof over their heads and they’re desperate. Local governments -many conservative-have failed to build social housing and have failed to attract developers AND have failed to deal with the NIMBYs who refuse to agree to have high density housing in their neighborhoods.

Building new homes may address the shortage but it certainly won’t address the ever increasing need for income geared housing.

Conservatives aren’t going to do shit for anyone except wealthy individuals and corporations. They never have and never will.

Socialism always FAILS everytime it has been done. Look at North Korea or Cuba for example. Those are countries where the government runs everything, it became a cancer that destroyed those countries. Those people have no ecenomy, no money and everyone is poor, well except a handfull of government elites. Everyone else has nothing and is powerless and dirt poor. That is the end result of socialism and where our liberal government is taking Canada. Canada needs a smaller and efficient government that is pro Capitalism our country has to generate more wealth. Overtaxing people is not the answer, we have less and less to give. The government loves to take our money but doesn't let us generate new opportunities.
