I think the reason they didn't stay sparkling is because the heart was broken. Like seen before, when the heart is displayed, everyone becomes crystals. (But only the naturally born crystal ponys stay that way). But when it's gone, everyone goes to normal. Just a little head cannon I had!!

My theory is that Celestia and Luna weren't born in Equestria, or were born before Equestria existed

i like the theory that they weren't born and raised in equestria that they where born somewhere else and that they were born alicorns or if not the hair flow is just another step for twilight until she becomes a super saiyan goddess. (big DBZ fan) and only came to equestria to help it from the windigos and won't leave until they know they can. Like for example twilight who became an alicorn not to long ago can most likely take over Celestia's place but that would freak out the other ponies way to much to see them gone especially to not have someone else to fall through incase something happens to her. I am not sure about starlight being an alicorn though if she does become one then she is going to need a lot more lessons than twilight did just to catch up to her.

don't forget king sombra and the crystal empire's history! when king sombra got banished to the north so did the empire. and in the season 3 priemere when the main 6 first got to the empire there was a huge force field blocking out the snow. so i guess it be fair if the writers did something like that again only more life changing for the show.

I'm tardy to the party on this one, but in the book Diary of the two sisters it talked about how alicorns used to live on the mountain where Canterlot exists(I think, it's been a while since I've read it), also lets mention how Flurry Heart is potentially more powerful than both Celestia and Luna as she being a newborn basically shattered the crystal heart with a scream.(unless all alicorn's voices are just that powerful and they just restrain it most of the time)

I think flurry heart is an alicorn because not only is her mom an Alicorn she was probably also a Pegasus first and then with her father is a unicorn, it kinda works.

I personally think that even if you Ascend into a alicorn you gain immortality. The kind where you can never grow old that is.
