The example of World War 1 and 2 is not at all valid. Yes, Germany was almost entirely distoyed in WW2 (and rightly so I would say, because it was factually guilty for the whole mess and the Holocaust), especially the Americans acted way more "gentle" afterwards, because instead of imposing the Morgenthau plan, they came along with the Marshall plan in helping Germany economically. This of course was also due to the beginning of the Cold War.

Great Q&A Ben..your responses are so immediate and the logic so obvious in the telling..just one issue some may have, myself included..is it possible..I'm sure it could be..to just slow down to a sprint when speaking so that the average listener could catch up with what you're saying..I am not slow in listening and processing any given statement you make but your mind races so quickly that even your rapid-fire monologue battles at times to catch up.. it's an unintended complement really..but just for those trying to stay abreast..like myself..just a touch less speed would facilitate broader understanding. I'm sure in these situations you want to accommodate as many questions as possible in the time-frame provided..but hey, it takes nothing away from the interest you generate..on just about any subject of significance..just a request.
