AM2 vs Am3 sockets

how would run am3 procesor on am2 board in terms of cores(would all cores run etc...)???

i have a asus m2n-e motherboard that supports am2, Will it works on some am3 cpu's and which ones? thanks

     Some boards did support both AM2 and AM3 cpu's which always had two seperate sets of ddr2 and ddr3 slots.  Since the FX CPU's memory controller only supports ddr3 you can't run ddr2.  If you install ddr2 with the AM3 cpu it will not post.  The cpu's memory controller must match the memory installed.  The idea was you could buy a dual core AM2 and in say 2 years install an updated 6 core AM3 but you need to remove the ddr2 memory and move up to ddr3 at the same time as the CPU.  AM2 needs DDR2 and AM3 needs DDR3 it's that simple.

     The Intel LGA 775 socket originally was running on ddr2 which ran the Pentium 4's, core 2 duo, and core 2 quad.   Since the memory controller was built in the chipset which is on the motherboard the old chips were able to run with ddr3 once the boards were supporting it when ddr3 came out.  Some boards even offered both. However you can not run ddr2 and ddr3 at the same time.  All the Intel LGA 775 cpu's could run on ddr3 if your board supports it.

new motherboard with AM2 :(

I recently picked up an old Peltier cooler from a thrift store. It comes with an AM2 bracket. Before I'm not going to build a new rig off of the AM2 platform. Would the AM2 bracket line up on a AM3 MoBo or is there a place that I can buy an aftermarket bracket?
