ОтветитьIf we exclude anthologies and sourcebooks, this is definitely my favorite book on ancient Roman Religion, and aptly titled. I've found that the most illuminating books about the ancient world always end up being pre-WWII. After the war scholarship took a sharp turn towards stringent compartmentalism. Idk if the two are related but I think they must somehow be. The method of compartmentalization can be fruitful to a lay person if they can climb that ivory tower ie. know where to look, afford the material, and have enough patience to read through 50 different specialists. For example, I went through like 13 modern books on the phoenicians recently and came out the other side still scratching my head, and then went to George Rowlinsons History of Phoenicia from the early 20th century and now I finally understand the Phoenicians and all those other 13 books I had previously read. So you need both. The old school will just give you all the data without an agenda, and the new school will dig in to the depths, and selectively present the data they need to in order to shape their ideological narrative. Which is useful, but you gotta go to the old school first to even understand what the new school is going on about. I hate that elitist sh**. Obviously there are modern scholars who are just as helpful as the older, but the scale is surely tipped in favor of the latter. Thanks for presenting this stellar scholarship, man!
Ответитьany "Magi" checked the charts for these dates?
