Breaker box was my initial guess after the power supply tested good, but otherwise I have no idea.

I built a computer a couple weeks ago that was running great but the owner was using an old cable that had a bad connection at the end and the pc would randomly shut off if he bumped the table and the brakers would go out too. Always use a good cable.

i had a psu that will remain off in case of surge or unexpected power loss i needed to flip the psu power switch to reset it. it is a 11 years old psu and i like to think it is still a thing with modern psu's to prevent power on that may damage the system components and it does so to isolate the components of the system from any short circuit. otherwise the system would not power on no matter what unless you reset it correctly.

that unit is still working perfectly and i still have it, it is an OCZ 850w gold psu i bought back in 2012 and i replaced it with a 1000w deepcool unit to futureproof my rig a bit but otherwise it works as good and almost as clean as on day 1 on that september 4th 2012 when i had built my old fm1 system with a A8 3870k quadcore APU that was fairly cheap at the time. i still hold on to that psu for another build from leftovers from upgrades i made to all the pc's in the house and maybe it can be useful someday.

Grag, would you consider investigating the claim of these Titanium class efficiency ratings?
Next time:
Using a Kill-A-Watt meter turn on the rig with the old Corsair PSU and compare those readings with the newer unit?
Great content as always sir!

Damn, this feels so strange. I had this exact same situation happen to me a couple months back, i was vaccuming too close to my PC, i heard a loud pop, and then my rig wouldn't show any signs of life afterwards. Like the customer in this video, my monitor worked fine in the outlet on its own, and i even swapped out the power board my pc and monitor were connected to and nothing would work. Ended up taking it into a repair shop as I didnt have spare parts on hand, and it worked fine for them right away. Brought it home and it booted no problem.
Still cost me $140 to learn that difficult lesson that nothing was technically wrong. But it was definitely a weird experience and i got no good answers from it but i'm thankful i'm not the only one with that experience! Amazing video like always!

Awe, glad you had your expert helper on hand to give you a hand with this one. :-) It's often the simplest solutions that are overlooked in our industry Greg, because most of us who've been doing this for a while, see, and start to think, "It can't possibly be that simple?"...When in actual fact, we can't make that assumption. Totally glad the user didn't lose out on anything and the rig was unaffected by the surge. Awesome to see that the surge protector did its job and took the hit for the system and didn't take it out in the long run. Hopefully the user was able to square away the strip & outlets at his home when he received the rig back. Thanks for this video, and all the work you do. Big fan of your channel.

If the circuit that everything was plugged into loss the the ground the outlet would would still work but things like a surge protector would not. Lamps monitors etc would work plugged in but something with a powersupply that changes ac to dc such as a computer would not.

There is also a possibility that the OCP in PSU or motheboard cut the power and wouldn't allow it to turn on before all the caps are discharged....

I have had more than one power bar go bang in my presence and the surge protecting device inside usually explodes violently if a breaker doesn't trip or a fuse blows before hand.

I really don't understand how anyone calls you stingy. This guy's PSU is fine and does not need to be replaced. If you wanted to load test it, maybe you should look into booting live Linux USB. I'm even more convinced now that you replace parts just to advertise your sponsor.

I had a power supply fry on me once. I didn't want to believe it, tried to power it on a second time. The first, it blew itself but probably didn't fry the system. The second time, it sent full voltage through everything. Nothing was salvageable. I had charred chips on the hard drives. Turned to ash. Electricity is nothing to play with. Always err on the side of caution. I often think "what if I hadn't tried to power it on that second time"?

Before we fixed our old house wiring....

Displayport cables shocked me.

Special.

It's feasible there was some weird, goofy interference with a bad ground on that circuit and the system.

I would have bet good money that his psu was going to be toast. That must have been one heck of a power strip to absorb that big of a surge. Most likely he will need to replace all the outlets in that room, just to be safe, done by a certified electrician. Have the wiring for that room checked and the breaker checked as well. All in all, a good job with the trouble shooting.

Years ago, we were having electrical problems in the mobile home park where I lived. Brown outs and surges were occuring frequently. One day I was sitting near my computer and we had a surge that blew a hole in my surge protector and set my curtains on fire. I was amazed that my computer, and my home for the most part, was unharmed. Called the fire marshall that day.
