Marvellous addition to a beautiful series of visual entertainment
ОтветитьThis is truly a great adaptation. A thoroughly enjoyable Watch. Watched this a number of times and it never disappoints.
ОтветитьWhen the BBC served us all not some woke bullshit
ОтветитьNot true to the book, but nevertheless, a good production very atmospheric at times. Not sure why the story line is changed alongside characters? Oh well....
ОтветитьA masterpiece and, in my view, the best of all the Christmas Ghost stories, probably with The Signalman second. Thanks so much for posting and if anyone involved in its production is ever reading this, a gentlemanly, understated, tip of the hat to you!
ОтветитьReally great ghost story
ОтветитьThank you very much for this, I loved it ❤️
Ответитьi first watched this ghostly m r james story in dec 2005 on bbc tv loved it back then and still allways will. an xmas ghost story to watch,
ОтветитьWhat’s the deal with the poacher who observes the Doc in both instances? Is he literally just a poacher? Or is he representative of the ghosts? Why is he not in the credits?
ОтветитьTommy Lascelles!
ОтветитьExcellent
ОтветитьThis is one of the best ghost stories (M R James or otherwise) that the BBC has ever done. It has the right level of suspense and scare and in my view that makes it more lingering and unsettling than the full-blown slasher-type horrors that dominate screens nowadays, as they purely rely on gore and jump-scares. The Mezzotint was very good too, as we're the 1970s BBC adaptations of M R James's ghost stories e.g. Lost Hearts. The BBC also did some really good dramas in the early 2000s, and a lot of what they come up with now just doesn't compare (but there are some exceptions, including some of the more recent ghost story offerings.) Thanks for uploading this!
ОтветитьThose cycle light are not period. Whata Mistaka to Makea!
ОтветитьThe BBC used to produce some really good dramas like these MR James stories, what went wrong ?
ОтветитьThe halcyon days of the now dreadful bbc
ОтветитьIt would be interesting to know which English curch served as the location for the destroyed abbey.
ОтветитьDavid Burke/Patton . from Sherlock Holes? He played Watson opposite Jeremy Brett
ОтветитьThis version left out some crucial details, that the lenses were painted with essence of dead man’s bones, and that Baxter got dragged off by invisible hands presumably to be hanged by those whose bones were used. Also we didn’t get to see the old view of Gallery Hill where a hanging was in progress, as seen thru the Deadmen’s Binos. And when he drops the binos and they break, a thick, dark liquid is supposed to ooze out. However, watching the movie did make me think that if you use the binoculars long enough, you will actually end up in the time you are perusing. I hadn’t considered that. Read the story to understand.
ОтветитьI wonder if there will be another adaption of M.R. James ghost stories for 2023?
Last years Count Magnus was dreadful. The only ghostly occurrence was at the very end when a gloved hand emerged from the coffin 🙄
One of his lesser known ones.
ОтветитьGood story, these two actors would make a good Holmes and Watson 😮
ОтветитьWhat decade is this set in? 1940s or 1950s
ОтветитьAn excellent adaptation of this chilling tale a must for Christmas 😊
ОтветитьMusic is top notch on this one.
ОтветитьNot a patch on the earlier stories ,using video tape looses all the atmosphere achieved with the 16 mm film adaptations ,and the music is typically bland ,
disappointing .
Watching this again on Christmas Eve, as there is no better time for a ghost story. A perfectly crafted story from the master and a wonderful production.
ОтветитьI just came across this horror series. This is the first of the videos I’ve watched and I’m already obsessed, I can’t believe people don’t talk about it as much as they should.
ОтветитьThank you for uploading
Ответить⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (7/10)
ОтветитьThe "you're being watched" moment is brilliant.
ОтветитьI watched this in the middle of the day and it gave me the chills. James stories have a real sense of evil
ОтветитьThank you so much for posting this. I was distracted the whole time, just trying to watch it on Talking Pictures TV, which, by the way, is the BEST channel on Freeview, EVER.
ОтветитьThis is an appalling travesty of a good ghost story by M.R. James. If you want to take a good idea from a master storyteller and ruin it don't "steal" its title and make it appear it's his story. An insult to the author.
ОтветитьI thought this adaptation was boring. Right before I watched this episode, I read the short story. I was more intrigued by the literary depiction. Maybe it was my own imagination that made the experience better.
ОтветитьWhy CHANGE a most excellent story?!?….The plot is completely changed 😡
ОтветитьThoroughly enjoyed this, the production, the cinematography, the soundtrack, and the actors. Well done! Thank you for posting.
ОтветитьThank you for posting this. I forgot how much I loved M.R. James. I have to say that this was very well shot. They got the atmosphere just right.
It's been a very long time since I've read him, so I'm off to my library to get one of his books and read it again as if it was the first time.
Here for Halloween 2024
Really enjoyable short story. Thanks for the upload.
Atmosphere that Gatiss can’t create at all.
ОтветитьWatson has gotten grumpy in his old age 😂😂😂
ОтветитьThey have got rid of the stalls of barchester cant get it on utube now
ОтветитьWhat butchery of MR James meticulous dialogue and carefully revealed plot! Really, why bother using his story at all?
Just so the screenwriter could inject anachronistic class antagonism into what was the friendly relationship among the host, his guest, and (yes) his faithful servant? Mustn't let the contemporary viewer get the impression that there was anything gentlemanly and convivial about those unenlightened olden days, right?
Superb stuff!
ОтветитьThe scene where he is in the bathroom and sees Baxter with the skull mask on makes me jump out of my skin, it is really scary!!
ОтветитьIf anyone knows where to find these on DVD please let me know!
Ответить"I'd fire him if I was paying him anything."
Pip Torrens is perfect for this part. Bl**dy servants. Expecting wages. The damned impudence of these people. Really. I blame that Mr Atlee.
Great
