Courier should have won but mentally and physically he couldn't overcome his negative experiences against Sampras. And he was really starting to fall off as a player by 96.

Courier méritait largement de gagner ce match. Le point de bascule c’est quand il a raté un smash très facile au milieu du match.

Sampras is the most poorly conditioned champion in modern history.
He had plenty of success on clay, even against great clay players- in short matches, in short tournaments.
But Roland Garros has no tolerance for such weakness.
So you see him chewed up and spit out by week 2.
