Surrender is the literal translation for the word Islam. Everything Gabrielle says about letting go, trusting in a higher power is called twakkul in islam and it is the mantra of Muslims. We pray with our hands facing upwards as well. The first surat in the Quran embodies steps of surrender similar to the ones Gabrielle talks about . It goes like this “In the name of God , the all merciful, whose mercy reaches everything and everyone, we give gratitude to the God of both worlds , the God who owns the end of everything, we pray to you and ask for your help, guide us towards the most straightforward path , the one towards which you guide those you bless , and away from the path of those who are lost and confused”

This video just came to me, I think I needed to hear it. I’m in a 12 step program too, the same one as her. We have a tradition that is taken rather seriously and she broke it here. She said she was sober in the program of AA. Our tradition asks us not to name the program in public, in books, in any media. I don’t understand why she did that. It’s obvious she knows the program. Not good idea. But o do like her message.
