Violence and mental illness is associated with fentanyl and other narcotics just as unvetted illegal immigration is associated with transnational drug trafficking. Oregon leadership unable to connect the dots with these facts and is endangering the safety of the public with their ignorance.

I work among the homeless here in Portland at a day shelter (not overnight) and this has always been one of my concerns. We aren’t allowed to fight back if we are attacked, and there’s never any security measures present. Someone could literally walk in and shoot the place up at any given moment if they pleased, or do something just like this. I’ve been trying to advocate for more security measures to be implemented where I work and at other organizations as well. An incident like this should highlight the mental health issues that plague the homeless community of the Pacific Northwest and America in general. We need to be more cautious when dealing with these people because they can be dangerous and are unpredictable. It doesn’t mean we neglect all homeless people because of the actions of one or a few, they are still human and deserve services. Regardless, this suspect is now gonna be housed for life paid for and by taxpayers which was no different than him receiving free services at a homeless shelter. In the end, as much as we can say otherwise, in his head this dude won.

The inhabitants of these shelters need to be screened for weapons prior to entry. Many of these folks struggle with drug addiction and/or mental illness. Some of them are violent ex-cons who were released from prison.
